That would be awesome. I didn't think Crane would have the financial risk tolerance to do that trade.
I though about Parra as well. But the fact that this season appears to be an outlier (though it may be a breakout), Gomez's defensive superiority, and the fact that Parra is yet another lefty, I would be willing to pay extra for Gomez. But I'm not sure just how much extra you would have to pay. Adding Parra and Lind would overload a team that already struggles against southpaws.
It's a long term commitment. Luhnow was probably going to go after a SP in FA eventually anyways so might as well try for one who is already on a relatively team friendly deal. Also think the attendance numbers have been encouraging enough for Crane to open it up a little bit. Team has to be making a good amount of money at this point.
Not to mention a 100% increase in TV revenue (or basically going from nothing to "something"). I believe they'll still also qualify for competitive balance revenue sharing as well.
Really trying not to get my hopes up with a playoff rotation of Keuchel, Kazmir, and Hamels, but holy hell.
Hamels is going to cost money and prospects. The fewer prospects under club control, the more likely Crane is going to have to pony up in the future for free agents. I hope he is willing to accept he may need to spend more in future as well. Granted, Hamels likely reduces the need for as many SP prospects in the future.
I agree on your point about lefties. It really comes down to what the cost for Gomez would be. I will say this, Gomez in center with Springer would really make Marisnick's defense easier to lose. Don't forget McCullers. If the Astros get Hamels and his contract, I don't think they resign Kazmir. I don't see Crane spending that kind of money on two starters the next 3-4 seasons.
He will spend less on prospects in the future because we won't have the big money slots anymore Luhnow finds good ones later in the draft too though, and Crane understands the importance of th farm
with the no-no, the NTC, and in general the seemingly increased interest in Hamels...what do you think the offer has escalated to? Appel + VV + Singleton? Is McHugh involved given that Keuchel/Hamels/McCullers/Kazmir (if there's some understanding) are already a sick 4 for next year?
It would shock me if Appel wasn't included in a Hamels trade. The trade you just proposed makes perfect sense, but who the hell knows? Who would've guessed Nottingham and Mengden as the return for Kazmir? I could see Santana and/or Kemp being involved, as far as our higher profile minor leaguers go. Would be funny if it was like Appel, Singleton, Santana, and a minor league reliever going back to Philly.
I heard Hamels didn't want to go to Houston... was there any explanation as to why? I searched online and didn't find anything and I looked around for a few minutes in a couple threads here but didn't find anything. Can anyone fill me in?
