Pretty sure Luhnow has already said Reed was not coming up this year

Didn't see that. Makes sense, I don't think he's quite ready. I like Moran and White's chances of giving solid production if they were called up though.

When did he say that though?

He also said the other day that there are a few players in the system who could help them down the stretch. The only people who could really fit that bill are white, Appel, Reed, and kemp.

His batting average is down, but only 4 guys 21 or younger that are producing better or have produced better (runs created plus) in the California League this year (200 ABs or more). There is a big difference from someone 21 (almost 22) putting up those numbers than some 23 year-old doing the same. Add 22 year olds, you can add another 3 guys that have been better. Of those 7 guys, Reed, Phillips, and Brinson are the only ones league average age or younger that make Fisher's line look like it is struggling. OPS tells a similar story as RC+ with maybe a guy or two more when filtered for age.

That said, Fisher's OPS numbers are being held down by BABIP which gets double counted in OPS. His BABIP his last 10 games is 0.380 so it is regressing to what one would expect based on his minor league career (~0.350 plus or minus in Lancaster).

By all accounts Tyler White is an awful defender, but man, posting a wRC+ of 142 at AA in 236 PAs and wRC+ of 204 (!!!) at AAA in 88 PAs is no joke.

He's an unconventional bat-first guy, but he's produced at a high level on offense for his entire minor league career.

The cool thing is that it's considered a drafting success to even have a 33rd round pick get to AAA. Chalk him up as another great pick by Luhnow & Co.

If he can't play defense that is a problem for us because we have too many of those already: Tucker, Gattis and Carter. I like money ball, or billy ball, but i do disagree on defense, i think you win with pitching and defense, like the AStros of the 70's and 80's did. I know that Singleton makes errors, but at least he looks better than Carter on defense, at least i think he is average.

Our hopes are Lowrie, because Valbuena is playing very good defense there, probably better than what Lowrie can do there.

    Actually, I'll take that back.

We've discussed White's defense at 3B before, and it's awful. He posted a .914 fielding % at AA.

So far at AAA, he's been playing 1B exclusively. So far, he hasn't made an error.

It's really difficult to scout defense based on box scores, but that's encouraging. Hopefully we see some scouting writeups eventually.

He was picked in the 30th or so round. Luhnow's choices were likely pitchers that can't pitch, guys that can play defense that make Marisnick look like he's juicing, or White.

Moneyball is about appropriately valuing players. When guys are hitting 40 homers, it is hard for a defense-only guy to compete. Defense has become more important than when Moneyball was written. That said, a bat-only prospect is better than a not-a-prospect guy.

well, if he said that within the past week, i missed it and stand corrected. i know he made a comment about giving tyler white a look if carter and singleton continued to suck.

He had less than 100 ABs last year at AA. That's not really repeating.

While the Luhnow regime has identified some fine hitters in the draft, TimPoopura was actually saying that their acquisition of low-minors position players through trades has been iffy.

Pretty much. I was also thinking aloud that, generally, the Luhnow regime has been better at identifying pitchers at the MLB level better than hitters.

We've had so many successes with guys like McHugh, Sipp, and Harris, but we haven't yet plucked an unheralded hitter from the scrap heap and seen him turn into something special. Instead, we've seemingly botched the evaluations on guys like JD Martinez, Ronny Torreyes, and Delino Deshields.

I don't want this to become a big argument about Luhnow's mistakes. I was just tossing out the hypothesis that the Astros are ahead of the curve w/r/t pitchers, but not as much with hitters.

Even if White's defense is a slight downgrade to Carter's defense (hard to imagine)...the offensive boost could easily make up for it.

If he can bring an OPS in the upper 700s, then that would be super sexy. Anything above that would be icing on the cake.

The GCL Astros won 4-0 over the Yankees 2. They did not allow a hit in a game that was called after 6 innings.

Miguelangel Sierra went 1-2 with a run scored in his US debut, while Kyle Tucker went 2-3 with an RBI single in the 5th. Daz Cameron stole 2 bases, giving him 11 on the season.

I figured they would be aggressive with Bregman. He could very well be ready for Houston by the middle of next year.

They can sort out the position stuff if and when the time comes.

And McMullen. Interesting, do they have open roster spots?

I posted a week or so ago about potentially moving him to Lancaster, as I don't feel he is being challenged.

It will be interesting to see what they do with him if he plays well in Lancaster. He wouldn't unseat Altuve or Correa, and the team isn't trading either any time soon. He'll either start playing some OF next season, or the team will likely be trading him.
