Never really got into FF VII, kinda stopped playing without finishing the game.

Started again a few months ago and stopped after this announcement, I'll now wait for the remake and then have a complete playthrough for the first time, so everything should be better for me because of not knowing parts of the story. Really lookin forward to that!

Heavily prefered FF VIII because of the brighter atmosphere and story though, maybe the remake's improved graphics will help.

This might be my reason to buy a PS4.

Nice necro bump. I forgot I even made this thread.

I'm not sure "excited" is even the right word for me. It was announced over a month ago and I still feel like I'm not even sure it's a real thing. My mind just can't comprehend it.

Also, I must say I'm a bit worried they'll make it not turn-based. I would be pretty crushed if they did that. Turn-based combat is part of FF7's DNA, in my mind. Take it away, and it's not FF7 anymore.

FF7 is my favorite game of all time. I've dedicated countless hours to it, and to this day I'll still start a new game every now and then. It's the reason I bought a playstation originally, and that I'm still a playstation user to this day. I've beat the weapons, I've gotten all the Master Materias and I've pretty much much explored every nook the game has to offer.

I'm very excited about the prospect of the remake, however Square inspires no confidence anymore. I'm worried this will be just like FF13, gorgeous with a fast paced battle system, but with a hand held tour of the game instead of allowing you to explore and move at your own pace.

I want them to be true to the original, but I'm very worried that the only thing they will be re using is the story and everything else will be redone.

The director of the remake has said to expect some story and gameplay changes. FF7 is one of my favorite games and I am so excited for this remake. However, I don't think it is going to ever live up to the hype of the original. Besides graphics and other minor changes, how can they make it better than the original? I hope I'm proven wrong tho.

I don't expect this game to come out until 2018 in the earliest. Nomura is currently working on Kingdom Hearts 3 and that doesn't even have a release date yet. I'm not sure which development team is working on the remake.

I seriously hope they don't change the battle system to the BS Final Fantasy 13 system.

    Leave the materia alone.

Don't mess up a great thing.

As someone who hasn't played many RPGs, can anyone please explain the appeal of turn-based combat in video games? Doesn't it make the experience less dynamic and therefore less fun?

Less dynamic maybe, but more strategic. And it isn't straight turn based. Characters all have individual speeds, so some characters get to attack quicker than others. And those speeds can be increased or decreased by various methods in battle. The fight rarely turns out as predictably as the turn based nature would suggest it would.

Something about being able to map out and execute a strategy without a million things happening around you that's very appealing for some of us. It's not for everybody, but obviously to those of us who enjoy them it's not less fun.

I really hope they keep the same battle system. Don't allow us to free roam battle. Keep it turn based. Always had you on the heels when you are poisoned with 100 HP left and you waiting for your turn bar to come.

Sorry. Apart from creating the most beautiful female CGI protagonist,
F8 was a chick flick half the time.

F7 was so much better from various angles

I enjoyed both on different dimensions tho

The casual/Non RPG fan is the reason they keep trying to change the turn based battle system when it never needed to be changed. They want so desperately to attract MORE gamers they change things in the system to make them more "fun".

The main thing I love about turn based battle systems is every character is your own. You are controlling everyone in your party. I hate just equipping stuff and just letting the computer control them off screen. RPG's should be about absolute control.

The issue though is that 90% of the battles (and I'm still being generous) does not require strategy and micromanagement (attack, attack, attack, attack, attack, heal if red, attack, attack, attack, attack, big spell).

So you're mostly left with a tedious time consuming grind for most turn based action RPGs.

I'd understand the argument for strategic RPGs, but that is not FF7.

Grinding was still fun. Watching that experience bar go up was such a joy.

It's going to be the greatest games ever. I don't even play games but from the voice of the community and in the gaming world, this is the game to take a bullet for.

They better not get rid of the turn-based system. Turn-based JRPGs are the traditional RPG and what I grew up on. I can't stand Western "RPGs".

Ya... it's not even necessarily my favorite RPG ever, but it's way up there, and it's hard to argue with the mass appeal of it. I feel like FF7 brought JRPGs to the US as much as Lord of the Rings brought fantasy.

Another thing I just realized they may not keep that they really need to: the world map.

World maps have mostly gone extinct, but I think they're really important to give you that sense of scale and openness.

As long as they keep turn-based combat, materia, and the world map, I'll be happy. Unfortunately though, of those 3 things, materia is the only one I feel confident they'll keep. Ditching turn-based combat and the world map would horrify me, but it wouldn't surprise me.

FF7 was the only rpg i've finished. This remake would certainly make me consider getting a ps4, provided the reviews are excellent.
