D.J. Fisher is 2 home runs away from a 20-20 season, if that means anything. Weird season. He's spent the majority of 2015 in hitter's heaven, and yet his OPS there is lower than his OPS in Quad Cities.
It's pretty clear to me: If Luhnow doesn't acquire a 1B by the deadline, he intends to bring A.J. up this season.
So.... I've been wondering. Which player in the Astros system has really jumped out at you with their success (or lack of) this season? I'd probably be the guy driving the Tyler White bandwagon. I'm probably also the only person on it.
Jason Martin, for sure. His advanced feel for hitting (15% K-rate, 9% BB-rate), and surprising power (.158 ISO) in his first year of full-season ball as a 19-year old are super impressive. He has some pedigree as a prospect, too, as a former 8th-round HS draft pick. Future is bright for him, I think. He's positioned for a breakout year next year.
he's pretty interesting. kemmer, who you mentioned earlier, is about the same level of interesting to me. on the flipside, among the higher levels, stassi's continued descent has been disappointing, not that my expectations weren't already lowered to begin with. it's as if that hit in the head ended him.
As for lack of success, probably a tie between Ronny Torreyes and Joe Sclafani. Both guys were tabbed as potential utility guys at the MLB level, and the stats projection systems (Steamer, Oliver, PECOTA, etc.) liked them at the beginning of the season, IIRC. We even used a 40-man roster spot on Torreyes this year. Disappointing all around, unfortunately.
Speaking of White... he's now on a 13-game hitting streak. He's played 19 games with Fresno and has entered a game with a batting average of over .400 in 16 of them. It'll be 17 out of 20 if/when he's in the lineup tomorrow.
Two guys that have been incredible surprises this year, for me: Francis Martes and David Paulino. Both big arms that we acquired as young guys playing at the lower levels. Paulino came from the Jose Veras trade to Detroit, I think, and Martes was obviously a piece of the Cosart trade. Now, both guys look like they have major-league potential. I don't have the evidence (or patience) to back this up right now, but this front office has really excelled at identifying pitching talent, whether it's off the waiver-wire or as young, low level prospects. Hitters? Not as much.
Preston Tucker, Carlos Correa, AJ Reed, DJ Fisher, Brett Phillips, Tony Kemp, Tyler White, Jacob Nottingham Most of these guys haven't hit the show yet, but they certainly seem to be doing a fine job to me. This entire regime seems to be on another level right now.
Paulino didn't pitch at all in 2014 as he was recovering from Tommy John surgery, so I guess he blew everyone away with how well he rehabbed.
DJ Fisher has been a bit of a disappointment this year. I expected him to blow through Lancaster, but after his monster debut he's struggled by Cali league standards. Having said that, the fact that his struggles have come at the Hangar and not on the road does make me feel better about it. I get the feeling he's gonna get those home numbers back up and will be mashing by years end. It's astounding how much talent has been removed from the minors this year (Ruiz,Folty,McCullers,Tucker,Velasquez,Correa,Mengden,Nottingham) yet we still may have the best farm in all of baseball.
Rehab aside, it's surprising for a low-level prospect in a trade for a reliever to perform as well as he has. It's a really, really nice surprise.
I think this is right. I would be shocked if White wasn't called up in September, maybe even sooner. The problem is what to do with Carter and Singleton. I'd like to see Singleton moved in a trade, personally.
Bad it has to be Teoscar Hernandez as he was number 8 prospect for the Astros and is not hitting at all this year.He is hitting only .210 as he is repeating double a, but has homered 13 times. Good i have Tyler White, he was nowhere in prospect status, and i mean, nowhere, not top 30 or in the book in BAseball America and is hitting .400 at triple a and over .280 at double a with a very high OBP. Does not give you the power you need at 1b, but with our team, we don't need that at the moment, we need a guy that plays defense and gets on base, if is at 1b, so be it, we have power at SS, 3b, LF, RF and DH
I'm about ready to see Tyler White. Love that OBP. And if he doesn't stick, Moran & Reed would be next in line I imagine.
