the simplest explanation would be that les is having anxiety and indigestion since reality hit him that he'll really have to pay lux tax in order to sign these end-of-the-bench players, while also giving up the sizeable tax rebates he would have received from taxpaying teams like LAC/CLE

Don't worry guys I got this:

"Who's the owner here? Les or you? Do you think owners are stupid? Winning games is what makes money in this league, that's common sense! Why are there so many posters on here always thinking they know more than they really do?"

I grew up with Asian parents and in a Chinese church....I'm used to hearing angry Asian people yell at me. Now I help others understand what angry Asian people are saying.

thanks for translating our angry friend's post, to which i must ask:

if les is such a genius businessman then why has he squandered ~80% of his personal net worth over the past decade? if les is overflowing with so much common sense for what makes money off this league then why has he (despite fan disapproval) insisted to stick with our hideous uniforms year after year for the past 12 seasons? and to answer the 2nd question in your post, lakers owner jim buss and knicks owner james dolan are most definitely stupid.

    Here's my theories:

    1) We are waiting on buyout/waiver opportunities. Carl Landry, Jason Thompson, Anderson Varejao, Kevin Martin, etc.

    2) We haven't resolved things with Montrezl. We're only offering a 1 or 2 year deal, and he wants the bigger deals his 2nd round peers are getting.

    3) Terry and/or Chuck want 2 year deals. We're only offering 1 year.

    4) Trade in the works? Unlikely unless it involves Ariza.

I think it's pretty obvious that this has everything to do with Harrell and his deal. Many 2nd rd picks are still unsigned, meaning there is no market set yet, and that deal has a lot to do with whether or not we end up being hard-capped (I am not a cap expert, but I think that's a pretty big deal).

Harrell's deal will probably also make a difference in whether we offer either guy a 2nd year. My guess is that 1-yr deals are agreed in principle, just waiting on Harrell to finalize and his agent is probably waiting things out.

The market seems pretty established for him. Christmas (drafted 4 spots after Harrell) was signed to a 4 years $4.5 million deal. Jordan Mickey (drafted 1 spot behind Harrell), signed for 4 years $5 million. That's a fairly clear trend.

Harrell shouldn't settle for a penny under 4 years $5 million.

Or maybe we want to lock him up for 4 years and he only wants 1 or 2? Given how he did in summer league he may want to bet on himself.

I think this is a good summary. Since we are only filling out 3 roster spots..one of which being Harrel..time is on the Rockets side.

If we are doing #1, then #3 might be unguaranteed or partial guarantee deals or with coaching options. Not going to have 16+ guaranteed contracts going into camp right?

#1. Seems unlikely. At least, I hope it's unlikely. We can roll with the players we have and those in the queue (Jet, Chuck, Montrezl).

#2. I can see where we might be haggling the numbers a bit.

#3. Mmmm....perhaps. But how much leverage do they have? Only we seem to understand Chuck's worth and Jet's 53 years old. Unless we don't want to lose Jet to his suckwad former team the Mavs.

#4. It's funny. If we sign Jet and Chuck, we'd look so heavy at the 1, 2, and 3 spots, with no minutes for them all. Ariza is the one player that could help us upgrade somewhere and maybe even shed a little salary in the deal; but I'm hesitant about losing him.

Haven't really read any posts in here, just somehow glanced at this text. Lulz? "If the owner of a PRO SPORTS TEAM is such a genius businessman..." Y'all kill me.

Agreed, and therein lies the problem. I recall reading Bima (see tweet below) and Bobby Marks on twitter about this and basically by offering that type of contract to Harrell AND the portion of the MLE that we gave to McDaniels, we would be hard capped at approx. $88 million, leaving us little flexibility in trades or taking on additional contracts.

My semi-educated guess is that we are offering him 3 yrs/$1.95 million (665k portion of MLE) or 2 yrs/$1.3 mil, and seeing those contracts you mentioned Harrell and/or his agent aren't ready to settle on that and don't particularly care about the Rockets being hard-capped. Bima also mentioned that the #34 pick got $700k annually, so 665k is going to be a really hard sell for Harrell.

If I had to guess, he'll end up with the 1-yr minimum and then hit RFA next year, just like McDaniels did. It's a gamble but it will likely net him a higher salary over the first few years of his career. I'd also guess that it won't play out anytime soon because there is no reason for either side to settle it until closer to training camp

By my calculations, if HOU signs Thornton, Terry, Hayes & Wood to minimum deals, it can sign Harrell w/MLE for up to $665k & fit under apron
— David Weiner (@BimaThug) July 22, 2015

he bought in 2 decades ago when nba franchises were far less valued and there were far less wealthy persons around. as a '30million dollar billionaire' today, there's no way he'd ever be able to buy into such a pro team in today's market.
