Having been a pitcher, it's because they don't wind up on a throw to the base, And that makes it awkward for them.
Has the presence of replay made the umps worse or what? They're definitely struggling in balls/strikes consistently... just a matter of time before those become "reviewable" (or correctable with a computerized K zone).
They've probably allowed themselves a wider margin for error knowing it can just be challenged and they can get it right then...at least that's my crazy theory.
