The Junior Garcia in Greeneville walked 2 and struck out 2 over 4 scoreless in the Appy Astros' 6-1 win over Bluefield. He's now 3-0 with a 0.37 ERA in 5 appearances (4 starts). This Junior Garcia was the first six-figure signing in the Oz Ocampo regime.
This guy is gonna be a solid fixture in the lineup for many years to come. Been excited since we acquired him, great to see some power starting to come around. Matt Carpenter has always been my comparison for Moran.
He was offered the Astros top position in the minor league evaluation/development.... not sure Luhnow thinks he is an idiot.
Actually it was top 5.. I still think we have a top 5 farm system. Probably not an elite guy yet at the top of lists, but we have the deepest farm in MLB. Our farm is better than the Rangers for sure.
He publicly "rejected" the Astros as if he was offered, IIRC. UPDATE: Two weeks after news that he’d interviewed for a spot in the Astros’ front office, Law just tweeted: “I have chosen to stay with ESPN. It was a difficult decision, and I’m very grateful to the Astros for the opportunity. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2...aw-interviews-for-job-in-astros-front-office/
To be an upgrade over whom? He's not that much better than what we currently have and we'd have to give up prospects to get him. If they're going to get a starter and give up something for him, it will be someone that actually makes the team better.
What??? Haren has a 1.085 whip, last year 1.17, so the guy is very good. Lets see our other 4 starter (K is out of the league) McHugh 1.29 (that is a number 3 starter to 4) McCuller 1.04 That number is greaaaat, that is a number 2 starter VV 1.28, another number 3 to 4 Feldman, 1.46, well, that is an average number 5 Right now, with the 1.085 whip, he would be only behind McCullers, and believe me, Mc has been lights out so far, you have to agree with that. Haren would be our number 2 or worse, a GREAT number 3 1. K 2. Haren 3. McCullers 4. McHugh 5. Velazquez That would be a great rotation
Out of his 19 starts, he's only made it to 7 innings in 5 of those starts. I'd prefer getting someone that can eat more innings. I guess it just depends on what these guys cost, but in my mind, if we are to trade for someone, it should be a legitimate #1 pitcher.
Maybe he was offered a different position, or maybe he took his name out of the running. I don't find it very definitive.
WHIP is only one stat. His FIP is 4.31. His ERA+ over the last 4 years is 89, and FIP is 4.17. Scott Feldman over the last 4 years has an ERA+ of 95 and FIP is 4.05. Trading for Dan Haren is sort of like trading for another Scott Feldman.
