definitely agree with this. Assuming the cost is in the same ballpark, which it should be given Price's impending free agency
Lol, yep! And for the record, I think if we are going to spend big money on any player between today and the beginning of next season, Price would be the top choice
The Cardinals certainly got it done with Scott Rolen and Matt Holliday. Seeing as how that's the franchise model we are poised to emulate, I'd say this front office certainly believes it at least makes their chances slightly better.
Yea it can happen and I'd love to see it Just know that the almost always take the most money or the biggest spotlight
Or the "right situation"... which is what St. Louis offered both those guys, and I doubt they'd have been able to sign them without the audition period. I don't think this front office will have any problems going after a rental... there's still a chance you can re-sign them, and as it is it won't cost you as much in prospects.
I'm pretty sure Price wouldn't be cheap when it comes to the prospects required They "will" sale But they don't have to
Price wasn't all that expensive for Detroit to acquire last year... and that was with one more year of club control.
Franklin was highly regarded And there was little doubt TB was moving on from paying him Situation in Detroit is different I mean if we can move Kemp and a low level guy for Price then yea, let's jump on it...:don't think it gonna happen like that though
Detroit can still very much pay him (if they believe he wants to stay there).... but if they don't believe they're in contention, they're going to put him on the market, get what prospects they can, and then re-sign him during the free agency period. There's certainly no rule that a team trading a player heading into free agency can't go ahead and re-sign that player afterwards... in fact, more "big market" teams should consider those sort of moves (esp. if they have a good idea that the player will re-sign there anyways). Then again, you have situations like Lester with Boston last season... as another team came in and swooped him away.
Ok cool you are right Let's trade Martes for Price, Martes has upside surely that is enough for a rental lol
I don't think you're following... rentals will not require as much as a club controlled player.... which is why I feel those are the type of moves they will eventually look to make (and they'll take their chances with attempting to re-sign the player if the situation fits). Martes was actually part of the trade for a club-controlled pitcher... which is why Luhnow got as much for him as he did. Believe it or not, a rental of Price or Cueto likely won't come close to what Jared freakin Cosart got in return.
Don't want Hamels. He's not that great anymore and not worth the ridiculous asking price Philadelphia asks for him. They asked for like Joc Pederson and Seager from the Dodgers last year + one other top prospect. How utterly ridiculous. I honestly hope the Astros just stand pat or just add a couple of decent players for non-top prospects. We don't need to sell the farm for a couple of rentals.
Give me Latos/ Smarjda (SP) over Hamels. Price is a game changer. They really need a catcher upgrade. Lucroy?
Catcher is not a primary option it seems. Conger has been doing better offensively than most catchers in baseball and looks to be getting more at bats. Castro's defense makes him somewhat serviceable if he isn't the primary option it seems.
So if we do pick up another starter, who is the odd man out? Either Feldman or VV? Would prefer Feldman out but have to worry about VVs durability.. Maybe they would move him to the bullpen
McCullers is gonna have to start missing starts, or he's gonna be shut down. He's already very close to his career high in innings, and we have about 13 trips through the rotation left. There's no way he goes every fifth day through the end of the year. I imagine if we do add a starter, him and VV are gonna be put on some sort of tandem system.
While I agree with you, catcher is the #1 longterm need in the org. The only above avg catching prospect in the org in A ball now. I would rather roll the dice on a proven all star level catcher, (Lucroy) than have a .230 Conger or a .200 Castro. Lucroy is a top of the order hitter .280/.300 and plays great defense as well as handles the staff well. (This is what an all star catcher looks like, Not that the Stros have ever had an all star catcher to compare Lucroy too.) His bat would make the single biggest impact on the lineup/team. Would it cost a lot to trade for Lucroy? you bet it would, but all star catcher don't grow on trees and I would say they are harder to find than an ace SP.
