Theoretically couldn't the Rockets decline his last year and clear cap space and then resign him with Bird rights. So you bring in KD and then resign Dwight and Lawson under the Bird rule.

Morey and his staff are freaking geniuses.

I think you would have to relinquish his bird rights to get rid of the cap hold.

Boo, well I'm sure there loopholes and ways to maximize cap space. We desperately need a BimaThug article to update the cap situation.

    Just insane....
how can anyone ever doubt DM again? Losing Josh was a step backward, but this Lawson deal keeps getting better and better...

The only way to do that would be to renounce his bird rights. If you did not renounce his rights the cap hold would be more than his current salary. That rule is in place to prevent the exact thing you are proposing.

Is it too early to proclaim Morey GM of the year?

Fully non guaranteed, or non guaranteed for certain conditions?

    e.g., don't go to counseling.
getting another DUI, or other domestic violence issues
doesn't play in x games because of off court issues...

Wait, I'm a bit confused. There's no actual option to decline, right? To get rid of Lawson, we would either have to trade him or waive his non-guaranteed salary. And if we simply waived him, are we even allowed to resign him again? (This also assumes he isn't claimed by one of the other 29 teams, which is a low probability given Cuban's fondness for our sloppy seconds.)

League executives vote for that, right? In which case, I don't think he'll ever win due to jealousy and also Morey's approach to negotiations might be grating. I can't prove that, but I think it's a pretty safe hunch.

Good. So the cap impact will be limited if Ty Lawson's life totally goes to hell.

Ty Lawson's agent, Happy Walters is also Corey Brewer's agent, I doubt he's unhappy with Houston

Yeah, this is Wizard-esque to get this.

I still think the Rockets have no shot at Durant, but maybe they could do as someone suggest and waive Lawson with the understanding they sign Durant and he takes the room exception. That would be a super team.

Yes, it's a modification of the compensation protection in Lawson's contract.

I do not believe the parties have to wait 3 years to modify the contract. That's just for extensions and renegotiations. They can do this now but may just not have all the details worked out yet.
