I think Ty Lawson likes to party I don't really think he's an alcoholic. I highly doubt that his body is so dependent on alcohol that he needs it to get through the day. I know this illness better than most as my dad has battled it for 25+ years in and out of rehabs jail and hospitals..... When your an alcoholic and hardcore as one poster mentioned your life goes to hell. You can't work you can't manage your finances and you end up depressed all the time and alienating yourself from the people that love and care about you.

IMO and I don't know the guy I just think he has a maturity issue and needs a reality check. He for sure needs counseling and help, rehab is a start just to put things in perspective and show him were his life is heading. With that said I would be highly highly shocked if this guy was a full blown alcoholic. Not to mention I'm sure the rockets have spoken to his family and agent and have a lot more info then we do.

After reading the Grantland article about how the Nuggets wanted to keep Lawson away from their younger talent, it sounds like we need to watch out for Lawson's potentially negative influence on some of our players!

Being on a winning team can do wonders for a player.

There is something called a functioning alcoholic. People who go to work but are alcoholics.

If you think that he got two DUIs in 6 months by accident or pure coincidence you are naive. BUT this doesn't mean that he can't turn it around and save his life and career.

I think this is true. It seems unlikely to me that the guy is full blown alcoholic, he seems like a careless dude that had a run of bad luck.

He has moved into a higher pressure situation here, he will be expected to raise his game. Luckily he will have more help then he ever has in his career. Couple that with a chance to win a title and I think he has every motivation to clean up his mess.

wrong question. its drinking he seemingly 'loves' and impaired judgement comes with alcohol. if you get caught twice in six months you're probably driving drunk most days.

low risk in bball terms, a pr nightmare if he hurts anyone ...

I'd say his life has gone to hell. He just got fired and was faced with jail time. There's not much left to lose. He's teetering. But he has at least accepted help, be it forced or not due to his legal situation, and he will have a chance to get treatment and get better. It's a genetic disease, so it's unlikely he will ever be free from it, but as noted, eing genetic means everyone is different in terms of their recovery too. So he could walk away clean with treatment or it will be lifelong and chronic battle for him. Luckily the Rockets are going be a support system for him although in our last bout with mental health I would argue it was a little bit rocky and we were not perfect. So I think we need to do better as well.

I'm assuming this behavior has been going for a long time with him and he just happened to get caught recently.

Thinking about Lawson and it doesn't worry me too much now since he did put up good numbers last year despite all the off-court stuff.

You can only be a functional alcoholic for so long eventually the Demons within always win if you don't get help for your addiction. Only time will tell but everyone including myself is speculating on the situation at this point. I think good or bad for the rockets on the court the truth will come out sometime sooner rather than later.

Unfortunately, the MADD lobby is so strong that rights are taken away pre-trial based on accusation of a misdemeanor.

It's unconstitutional, but I guess we shouldn't mind if it's for our own good...

yup. I agree. But he has a chance now to change his life. The future isn't predetermined he can turn it all around if he is determined to.
However his problem shouldn't be downplayed or swipped under the rug by the fans here, just because he signed with the Rockets. Getting an uber account or a driver won't solve it. Or entering a 10 day rehab/spa. He must work on it and admit it.

Funny thing that he was best buddies in highschool with Beasley, another guy with serious addiction issues.

Yeah, this is one of the reasons I think resigning JET or another grizzled veteran (in addition to having John Lucas around) will be huge. If Lawson sees that he can be the final piece to put us over the top, and if there's a solid locker room presence from an older guy to keep everything in check, Lawson will be okay.

Rockets are surrendering a #1 pick in 2016. It's only protected if the Rockets fail to make the playoffs and wind up in the lottery.

    I trust our organization.

It's funny how Dallas fans feel like they are the best place to turn around players and have proven to be false. As Rondo and Odom barely were able to find a team when they left Dallas...

Us on the other hand...well Artest went on to become part of a championship team and Smith did well here. We get these problem guys and don't hear a peep about how bad they are as people or teammates.

Hopefully Lawson won't let his teammates down, in the end it has to be about that. Playing for a team that was irrelevant it's easy to let them down. They ain't going any where any ways. Here though it'll be different. You have guys like Harden and Dwight. Hopefully Hayes and Terry...guys who will put their bodies on the line to win that one big game.

Maybe Harden being a night owl will help too. He has a teammate to go out with that he's supposedly cool with. Why Harden? Well...has Harden had a DUI? He's obviously doing something right there and if Lawson is hanging with Harden he could hopefully pick up on that.

Clutchfans is going soft. I'm not very funny, but I will now have to attempt jokes at his expense just b/c ppl don't want me to. You brought the jokes on yourself, Tywon......

But the Nuggets are tanking, so that second rounder Morey got is actually going to be pretty good. Denver had to get something, and a lottery protected first (plus peanuts) is about as good a deal as you're going to get for a legit starter. The only reason his value is so low is because of his drinking problem. It's a classic Morey move, a low cost calculated gamble, with manageable risk and good upside.

Morey got it done, but all this "classic Morey move" and all that. Who among wouldn't make that deal? Who wouldn't have taken the Harden deal? Those weren't very tough decisions.

The Wizards didn't think as highly of Harden, or he would be there not here.

Morey just always seems to have us in the right place to take advantage of a move when it's there, that's what has been so impressive. Prigs and Paps non guaranteed deals are what made our package look good, those were good moves made in an earlier date for just this opportunity.
