So you are feeling entitled because a fellow CF member has a bad memory concerning Smith. There is no cure for you either. I was not on the Smith trade bandwagon and I really did not care that much how Morey acquired him - but I guess then it is a signing. I remembered it was a cheap acquisition and it paid off and now he is signed elsewhere. that is what matters now
He needs the Rockets more than the Rockets need him. I think both Smith and the Clips will not be happy with this move. I see a Piston Smoove more than a Rocket Smoove.
better go make the deal with Miami.... Now we can actually use Anderson, get Shabazz's rookie contract for the next 3 years - and eat Chalmers last year...
I think a big reason they wanted Smith was for the alley oop potential between him and Deandre. We destroyed them with the 4-5 PNR in the playoffs and Doc must have found that very appealing.
I think it's funny how the national narrative changes with Smith going to LA vs. what it was when he came to Houston. With us it was "combustible attitude and "knucklehead chucker"...now with LA it's "perfect fit off the bench" and "skilled big man to help ease Griffin's load".
I read Clips gave him 1.5 million to our 2.5 million. If accurate, Rockets didn't screw this up, Smith just decided to leave. Whatever, I liked him sometimes, sometimes he killed me with Artest-like screw ups. I'll miss the added depth, but it's not the end of the world, IMO.
Agreed. I see the return of chucking bad shots. I see him wanting to out-do Paul Pierce with volume of lazy fade away long jumpers. He won't continue the Rockets 300-500 threes a day regimen, and he will adopt Deandre Jordan's freethrow shooting practice. (once every other week) He will do what he do with bad turnovers compounded by complaining to the ref when he turns it over instead of getting back on D. Actually I just got back from the future, and I brought with me J Smoove's shooting chart for 2015-2016: Spoiler
The difference is really only 500,00 (Detroit pockets half the difference above the min) but yeah - he left for "winning" and a "defined role," whatever that means.
We did screw it up.... The Clips gave him whatever they COULD... We offered 2.5M and COULD HAVE given 4.5M.... It's a matter of respect....
Smith was really a difference maker for the Rockets last season. No way do they have the success they had last year, without him. We have lots of power forwards, but Smith brought a combination of defense, shooting, and playmaking that our other 4s just don't give you. And those were areas that the Rockets already are weak at. I don't know how we're going to address any of those 3 areas in the remaining free agency period.
The Lakers gave Kobe a bazillion dollars out of respect. You know who gives up flexibility out of respect? Teams that lose.
I aint sayin give him a max deal... but 4.5 is nothing for a player of his caliber - STILL woulda been a sweetheart deal... and whats with all this flexibility bs - its a 1 year contract!?!?
So we give Brewer 8M... but will only give JSmith 2.5 - when we could go s high as 4.5.. naw...cant imagine why he left....
Even if we did that, we would still have to convince him that he would have significant minutes at PF.
How could he not? OW at pf we have Dmo (coming off season ending injury...), TJ the bum beater who we need to trade and a 2nd rd rookie.... why are people seeing a shortage of minutes? As it stands now, pf has gone from a position of depth to a huge hole - 2nd only to pg...
The Rockets have two PFs who were ahead of him in the rotation last season and drafted two more players who can play minutes there. If moving Jones meant keeping Smith I'd have done it. I don't want to watch Jones sucking a bag for a third season in the playoffs.
Regardless, he still left money on the table right? Even more money if you consider the state income tax there. I don't think this was solely a monetary decision. If they really sold him on playing SF as someone mentioned, then he's going to run into the same issues he had in Detroit.
