Game 7 NBA Finals versus Lebron and the Cavs. Down 1 with 28 seconds left. No timeouts. Cavs have the ball in the bonus. We need a stop and a basket. That's a stop. And a bucket. A defensive play. And an offensive play. Back to back.

Cleveland has Lebron at the top, Kyrie and Shump on the wings, Love in the corner, and Mozgov coming up to set the pick.

I can't think of a better defensive combo than Ariza/Smart matching up on Lebron/Kyrie. I can't think of a better offensive backcourt to go after a needed bucket late in the game than Harden/Smart.

That's how much I think of Marcus Smart.

you should all just forget about Smart for at least a year. Trading him would take a kings ransom not because he is destined to be a star but because it will require for Ainge to change his direction. Now if in a year Boston has done nothing in attracting a star, or getting a high draft pick and drafting someone with the potential to be one, and Smart has not improved, then we can talk again.

Everyone except guys on the Rockets seem to be headed for stardom in your eyes lol. If Smart was headed for stardom why would Ainge even be trading him? Trade your star in a package to get a star yeah that makes a ton of sense :p

Boston right now has a go ton of assets but they lack something big, which is why they're willing to trade Smart because they need a star and Smart in their eyes isn't gonna become one otherwise they wouldn't have drafted possible replacements and he wouldn't be on the trading block. A package centered around Capela would probably do it but Morey would be insane to trade him, dude is a way better prospect than Smart.

All these questions you're raising about Capela don't make sense, Capela is a rookie and has very little experience, outside of getting injured there is no way he will perform worse than he did last year. And last year he proved he was already a decent backup big man. Given his work ethic chances are he's gonna be a star once he gets around 5 years of exp, dudes like 21 there are NBA rookies older than he is. Kanter is gonna have 2 teams offering him the max and I'd take Capela over him any day of the week, smarts a good player but there are so many good pgs right now you can find a good player at that spot if you have cap space.

Problem is it's hard to know if he's still on the trading block or why he was on the trading block in the first place. It might be that Boston was just trying to send a message to the Kings that they were willing to send a package around Smart in exchange for Cousins or something of the sort.

It's hard to see a team give up on a player after only a season when they used such a high pick on him.

Hehehehehe. Yeah I believe everybody is gonna be a star. Snicker Snicker
I publish a list every year at draft time of players that are not going to be stars and that I think are going to be a bust or underperform. lol

I'm not the one that suggested Ainge would trade him. I personally don't think Ainge will trade Smart short of getting a true superstar back and I think it would have to be certain superstars at that. I didn't start the thread. I haven't heard anything about Smart being on the block other than the fact that Ainge was willing to trade just about anything to get DeMarcus Cousins.

So, I don't think Ainge is dumb enough to just trade his star to get a star. However I do think Ainge would consider trading Smart for a superstar of Cousins' ilk. And perhaps Ainge would trade Smart for a guaranteed top 6 lottery pick in next year's draft??

Boy, I sure hope you're right here. Because if so, if Ainge really doesn't think Smart is a star and is willing to trade him for a young big like Capela then I think a deal will eventually get done. I think Morey would do that for Smart.

Haven't raised questions about Capela. I simply pointed out he played 90 minutes last season. That's not enough to critique what he is going to become.

Sure there is. Happens all the time. You have no way of knowing that.

No, he didn't. He played 90 minutes. Sure he looked good in the playoffs. So there was finally some spark, some hope for optimism. And we for sure hope he's already a decent backup big and is headed for stardom. But Capela proved nothing in 90 minutes. He did prove he was a better option than Dorsey in the playoffs.

That's great. I hope that's exactly what happens. I want all of our players to outperform and become more valuable both on-court and in trade. It helps our team the most.

But.....5 years from now is 5 years from now. We're trying to win it all NOW! And that's one of the precise reasons why I'd give up Capela's future potential for the immediate potential of Marcus Smart.

There's 2 sides to the coin here. Capela and his future potential and Smart and his future potential. If you had to choose which of these 2 players had proven the most in the NBA about their future....you'd have to choose Smart...not only because of his rookie campaign but because we saw him play at OK State and almost lead his team to the championship. We saw his character as he came back to Ok State to try to win it after being almost guaranteed to be the #1 pick in the 2013 draft. We already know a whole lot about Smart. We know what he's about. And all those things you say about Capela, work ethic, etc., Smart has those too. Smart has character, work ethic, skills, and basketball iq. He just happens to be a Celtic so people like you haven't studied him as well as they have our player who played a grand total of 90 minutes during the regular season and 127 minutes in the playoffs.

Oh, you can always find a player. There's so many good pfs right now that you can always find one of them too if you have cap space. Which we do not have cap space so you have no point to be made here regarding cap space...do you?

We don't just need a player at PG. We need a certain kind of player at PG. We have to build this team to be able to beat the Grizzlies, Clippers, Warriors, Spurs, and Cavaliers in a 7-game series. Just any pg aint gonna do it.

We've still got JSmoove dangling out there as our 3rd big. We could bring him back. And that means that Capela's role next season may not be as important as the starting PG role on this team. Most likely Capela's role is not going to be as important as our starting PG role.

So, in any trade there's give and take. We would be trading the long-distance (5 years you projected) potential of Capela for the immediate potential of Marcus Smart still on a rookie deal in a move that would solidify our PG position now and would also allow us tremendous cap flexibility going into the summer of Durant.

However.....I think all this talk is for naught. Because I think Ainge would laugh and hang the phone up if Morey offered Capela for Smart.

    By 2/16:

Smart will be traded; if he brings back 'the star' C's (desperately) seek.

Smart will be traded; if Rozier becomes 'the next big thing'.

You were the one who thought about a package of Dekker, Capela and a pick for Smart though, why would you say that if you think it'll take superstars to get him?

Anyway regardless I think we all know this topic is moot because Ainge and Morey are cut from the same cloth, they want a great deal or no deal so if we were to get Smart now IMHO it would take more assets than he's worth.

It is time to over pay... The window is closing

DMo or Jones ( we will only sign one anyway )
Capela ( one must give to get. We have Howard --> CC is a back up 5 -> next 2 years anyway )
KJ McDaniel S&T ( with Smart / Ariza were are his minutes anyway )
    And Pick if needed

I think the money would be close but work long term

Ugh. Seriously? Go back and read the thread to see why I would bring up a package of Dekker, Capeka, and a pick.

Let me spell it out for you real slowly.

First of all, Play07 posted this ridiculously hometown lopsided trade proposal for Smart.

Dekker and _ones, eh? Yep, that'll git 'er done.

So then coachbadlee agrees that he'd do that trade of Dekker and _ones for Smart. Here's his post.

Why by gee golly, who wouldn't? Well, Ainge wouldn't. That's who wouldn't. All of us homies would give up Dekker and _ones for Smart. Screech! Actually that's not true either. There'd be some posters here staying up sniffing glue who would say we're overpaying for Smart offering up both Dekker and _ones. And they'd want to keep _ones.

All I did was post a more realistic value of assets that would come close to tempting Ainge for Smart. I don't even think it would be enough. But I put it out there to shake these guys up that they're not even close to Smart's trade value.

    Here's my response.

Read the thread dude if you want to know why I said something. Yes, it's moot. Smart's breaking out right now. His trade value is spiking to the high heavens. Not happening. Maybe if we threw in DMo with Capela, Dekker, and let Boston sign McDaniels outright. Might have an outside shot then. But most likely not.

All the same I'd love to have him and I'd offer up the package I suggested and close the deal in a heartbeat if Ainge said yes. But as you can see opinions run the gamete around here.

But read the thread if you want to know what I posted. I shouldn't have to spell it out for you so plainly. Just read the thread.

Capela was the deal breaker for me. He is set to break out this season.

Or Smart is retained and Rozier is traded. Smart next to IT or Bradley is a better fit.
