Dwight can opt out after next year.

[Opt out] FA Summer of 2016
[Opt in] FA Summer of 2017

DeAndre starts his new 3+1 deal next year

[Earliest opt out] Summer of 2018

Mav fans for the next few pages in this thread keep dogging on the Rockets and Houston when neither of those have anything to do with the DJ situation (other than it going down in Houston).

Rather watch the Clippers win 10 championships than Mavs win another one.

I was absolutely sick to my stomach watching that garbage city and team hoist that trophy in 2011.

As usual, J.R. gets to the gist of the issue with this Grantland article. Oh, the bleating of the MFFL sheep can be heard far and wide on Dallas sports talk radio this morning as they whine, moan and curse DJ and the Clippers for what went down last night. But, as I have consistently maintained, the real fingers of blame should point to the so-called MBT (Mavs Brain Trust). This was a slow moving train wreck that was a long time coming for the Mavericks and most of it is due to their very own actions. Mark Cuban has eschewed traditional ways of building a team for 15 years. He basically blew off locating, scouting and drafting young players even to the point of pointedly ignoring the wishes of Donnie Nelson & his scouting department to acquire players. And for a long time, having Dirk allowed him the luxury of pursuing this course. But Dirk is 37 now and cannot cover up all of the mistakes in the past which have come home to roost:

The Mavs started free agency with only 4 players under contract and just over $30M in cap space. They had no up and coming young players on cap friendly contracts because they never bothered to draft any. It all came down to either getting a so-called "big fish" or bust. In addition, Cuban tried to "game" the process by kissing up to Dan Fegan, DJ's agent, with various favors in the hope that he would "steer" DJ to the Mavs. Indeed, it was Fegan who "gave" the Clips that ultimatum that in order for DJ to return to the Clips, they'd have to first trade Chris Paul which was preposterous. So when Cuban took Satnam Singh in the 2015 draft - a guy who cannot play basketball but was a Fegan client - it was with yet another sychophantic wink to Fegan:

As for DJ? I believe he looked at the fact that he was leaving a playoff team for one that would have a tough road just to snag the 8th playoff spot:

Clearly this is something for which DJ had no stomach. He wants to be that guy in the background spraying the champagne and not the guy up front who is responsible for getting his team there. And so, as I sit here listening to the all the MFFLs verbally burn DJ, the Clippers, Blake, CP3 and the NBA in effigy, I have not heard nor expect to hear anyone in Dallas point the finger of blame where it truly belongs - on the man whose arrogance & hubris has been the one constant in the affairs of this team over the past 15 years and upon whose head, the ultimate responsibility for this fiasco rests. The smartest man in the Shark Tank ended up playing himself and it couldn't happen to someone more worthy.

I am sorry maybe I didn't explain it well enough....not Dwights opt out...Dwight end of contract correlating with Jordans opt out. I still think I am off a year but I was trying to figure out if maybe Jordan had set it up for that specific year so that he could opt out of the clipper contract when Dwights full contract is over. Therefore coming back to Texas then and play with the Rockets maybe?

Do you also point the finger at the MBT for 15 years of playoffs, 2 NBA Finals, and 1 ring? A hell of a run if you ask me. Better 15 year run than every team but, what, the Spurs and, I suppose, Heat? If you call that a "train wreck", than what do you call the Rockets missing the playoffs better than half the time in that time span with no rings to show for it?

How can anyone with an ounce of basketball knowledge say Mark Cuban is below average owner/GM?

I guess we won't hear Parsons calling himself the best recruiter in the NBA anymore.

Absolutely. How can anyone with even an ounce of basketball knowledge say anything otherwise? He inherited a team that was set to win it all then he tore it apart.

Yeah, see that a lot down here in the RGV. Rockets fans give up quick on the season down here since this is a Spurs dominated area and what the Spurs have done to improve their team this off season. I for one will never sell out the Rockets have been a die hard fan since 1979. Can't wait for the team to prove the nay sayers wrong once again. Go Rockets!!
