I said the same thing earlier.

What if, for example, LMA felt bitter the the Blazers lost to the Spurs on the playoffs. LMA always wanted to resign in Portland for the most possible money but tells the Spurs that he wants to sign with them. The Spurs then trade away several players and let other free agents walk in order to create cap space. All other free agents sign with other teams, and then at the last minute LMA "changes his mind" saying that he has been "terribly regretting his rushed decision and will miss the fans of Portland". Thus he would get the most money with Portland while crippling the Spurs.

Hypothetical situation. But what is to keep something like that from happening?

 

An oral agreement is legal at midnight.

Nothing, LMA could sign with whoever, and until the contract is signed its just a verbal agreement that doesn't mean **** legally... Obviously going back now could hurt future deals for him and his integrity but he's allowed to do it.
