I had to look up Ashby's definition of a foul tip, because I had never heard that before. Lo and behold, he was intriguingly correct.
A foul hit Castro in the neck area and stuck there for a bit between it and the upper part of the chest protector. Ashby said had it stuck there and then he grabbed it, it would not have counted as a foul tip. He said it first had to strike the mitt. He was correct. Although it appears it could be caught directly in the bare hand.
I can't escape Alan Ashby even by listening to the Indians broadcast. One of their announcers was a teammate of his when they came up with the Indians, is wishing him a Happy Birthday, and is trying to get him to join them for a half inning later.
He's not a professional broadcaster. He's a former ball player "analyst" that was miscast as a pbp guy.
