I never said it wasn't legal.

I said the league has wide latitude to punish the Clippers if they choose to. I also said that we didn't know everything that was going on... i.e that there is a gentleman's agreement, etc.... the reports are that it is common for teams to try to get players to back out. Assuming that is the case, then my guess is they don't punish the Clippers based on what we know.

I would also point out that at least one of those sources said that DJ backing out would cause chaos potentially.

The league needs to do something about it, or discuss how exactly they will handle the situation because it effects many players and teams.

So can Dallas technically also nix the Wes Matthews contract and tank the season now?

Or better yet, will Cuban just offer Bev and Brewer max contracts each just for the hell of it?

Jordan goes back to LA, Dallas throws $10 mill at Smith. It's inevitable.

I'd like for him to do this because it further confirms the notion that Cuban's basketball decisions aren't made with analytics.

Doesn't matter what a "front office" person who doesn't make decisions tells you. The CBA clearly states that no "verbal or written agreements" are allowed during the Moratorium. So, you were told wrong.

All that is allowed is negotiating the terms and conditions for what you will sign later. Bosh saying he's fine with the terms Morey gave him does not mean Miami cannot still talk to him.

Think about it: Bosh can only talk to one team at a time. They aren't all in a room together. It makes sense to first see what Morey will offer and to make sure Morey can clear cap space to back his offer. So, Morey offers the max. Bosh then talks to Miami next. What is wrong with that?

And how would the Moratorium stop that. Bosh would still do the same thing Moratorium or not. He'd expect to be shown how Morey intended to clear cap space.

    I very strongly dislike the Mavs. I don't like Dallas. I don't like Cuban. I don't like Parsons. I don't like Dirk. I don't like #MFFL. I don't like anything about that team.

I don't really like the Clippers either, but that's not my point.

I want Deandre Jordan to go to the Mavs. That's what he said almost a week ago. Sure, people are saying that this has happened before. But come on, how ridiculous is that? The Mavs have been sitting on $20M in cap space since last Friday intending to use it on DJ. Meanwhile, almost all of the free agents get signed while they are holding that cap space, only to have Jordan change his mind at the last minute?

Yes, it would be funny to watch the Mavs get screwed like that. But no, I don't want it to happen.

I know this is a slippery slope-extreme example-highly unlikely: but what would be keeping a free agent player from doing something like that on purpose? Let's say, for example, that LMA actually was intending to stay in Portland. He tells the Spurs that he wants to go to SAS, the Spurs trade away/let walk several of their players to create cap space and then don't sign anyone so they can preserve that cap space, then LMA just resigns with Portland? The Spurs would be screwed. LMA could make more money by resigning with Portland and would have intentionally hurt a conference rival. In the ultra-competitive NBA, why couldn't something like that happen?

The league should not punish anyone here though. They can say whatever they like but Rockets not getting Bosh it hurt us too. Look at the roster we had coming into the season. Morey had to make up the depth he lost. If DJ goes to LAC it's going to screw up Dallas but boo hoo.

One thing the League can do to prevent this I guess is to simply make it so when offseason starts you can sign players and not this period of in between where you can only talk with them and not sign.

It would at least prevent players from backing down and all this becoming so public as it now is I think.

And you are misinterpreting the rules, see my post on the previous page for longer explanation of why. The rules state when the League can step in and not. This is not one of the times they can step in.

You're misusing a clause in the CBA, that people often misuse in order to create a scenario that cannot happen.

When the players renegotiate their CBA, I can guarantee that this situation will be a huge topic of conversation. Enjoy this season and next...The NBA will go into prolonged lockout.

They have wide latitude to punish teams for something that isn't against the rules and that happens frequently.

So, in theory they could fine Daryl Morey for signing Corey Brewer to a contract just because they wanted to right?
