In theory, you could do a 3-way trade, where Terry (or Brewer, or Beverley) was rerouted to another team, with Portland picking up additional assets from a contender. Houston could also throw $3.4M to offset the cost of the contract for Terry. A shrewd contending team might actually see an overpaid Terry as a potential trade piece to add salary in season, in the same way that the Rockets added Alexy Shved's contract last year. This is why free agents aren't allowed to officially sign contracts until the July Moratorium is completed. Teams can't make final offers until they know exactly how much cap space they have, so these verbal commits might change slightly, but the parameters will remain the same.
Harrell can be traded 30 days after being signed, however keep in mind that if the Rockets want to sign him to anything above the minimum ($525,093), they'll have to use cap room or the mid-level exception. As such, he's unlikely to be of much use as salary filler, as he'll only increase the allowable incoming salary by 600-800k. If he is traded as an asset, either his rights can be traded before he is signed, which count for $0 against the cap, or he can be accepted by any team without salary matching using the "Minimum Player Salary Exception".
Yeah, depending on how much of the MLE they use on Llull, if any, Harrell could interestingly become very useful for salary matching in a sign and trade. Every extra dollar given to Harrell would be an extra dollar given to Aldridge or Love. Papanikolau, Prigioni, Jones, Dekker (signed), Dorsey, Nick Johnson, and Harrell (signed at the minimum) could bring in around $18 million, I believe.

If Prigioni were to go back to Spain, would the Rockets still be responsible for the $400k of his contract that is guaranteed? Would it count against their cap?
I believe Prigioni and the Rockets (or whichever NBA team ends up with Prigioni's contract) can negotiate to VOID the contract and be let off the hook for that $440k. That's what Spanoulis and the Spurs did after the Rockets traded him to San Antonio for the draft rights to Luis Scola.
as of now, the guaranteed deals are: harden howard jones dmo capela ariza who else and what's the total figure it comes out to?
http://rockets.clutchfans.net/8859/houston-rockets-salary-cap-update-2015-offseason/ I find it somewhat ironic that a poster named "do work son" entered this thread to post a question that is clearly answered in the last salary cap update from a few weeks ago. (Sorry, don't mean to pick on you. Just found it funny, is all.)
Ok Bima. Is it logistically possible to fold an Aldridge and Beverley (or Brewer) three team S&T all together to where the Rockets don't have to trade Ariza?
Yes, it is. Example: Jones/Papanikolaou/Prigioni/picks to POR Brewer(S&T)/Johnson to [3rd team with cap room] Aldridge to HOU (In this scenario, Johnson would be a "sweetener" to the third team as an incentive to participate in the S&T. A pick could be used instead, with Johnson going in the package to POR.) Not saying that it's LIKELY. But it is "logistically possible".
Bima, sorry if this has already been asked (and answered by you). At this juncture, is this roster doable? Bev/Terry/Johnson Harden/Brewer Ariza/Dekker DMO/JSmoov/Harrell Howard/Capella
Of course, it is. Rockets fully control whether they keep Beverley (they can match any offer). They can also offer Brewer a good-sized new contract if they so choose. They just need Smith to take the MLE or less. Also, you leave off Jones, for whom the Rockets could probably get something of value.
Now, the rockets have the MLE, so a chance to keep Smith is getting a high, is it? No team has made a offer to him yet, I do not think he will get a big offer from other teams
Bima, with Baynes now gone, does SA still need to move Diaw to sign LMA into cap, or does it solely depend on how much Duncan/Manu take as well? Mainly, wondering if the "LMA wants to play with a center" can now have a significant negative effect on SA in the LMA race.
All depends on what Duncan and Ginobili sign for. If they make anything approaching their 2014-15 salaries (which were both bargains, btw), the Spurs may have to move Diaw. So much is in flux with the exact salary cap figures not yet known.
Bima, saw your tweet in the Cyber thread. I'm not familiar with how the salaries can work in doing a S&T for Bev. Would we be able to utilize 100% of the salary that Bev gets S&T'd for or is it only a percentage? Meaning if he got an offer sheet for $10m and we could do a S&T, would we get to use all $10m to facilitate a trade for LMA?
Sorry never mind, someone answer this questions regarding the Base Year Compensation. Just in case anyone else had the same question and to be sure it 50% of the salary that can be used for salary matching purposes I believe.
This. Yes, I have accounted for BYC status. If Beverley signs for anything above the range for which the Rockets would gladly match, 50% of that would materially facilitate a hypothetical multi-team sign-and-trade deal for Aldridge.
