It's a Monday night game against the Royals, 20,000 isn't bad especially considering it's a holiday week.
Most teams with consistently great attendance also have a solid season ticket base. For obvious reasons, the Astros season ticket sales have decreased substantially over the last 10 years. That being said, not only has this team improved faster than people expected, attendance (and city-wide interest) has actually improved faster than I thought it would... its still going to take not only a successful season, but a playoff run as well to get the season ticket sales back, and then get overall consistent attendance.
Hey, since 2012 they've improved from 3rd worst average attendance to 4th worst to 5th worst to 6th worst!
We were right around the middle of the pack when it comes to attendance last night. KC @ HOU: 21,419 TEX @ BAL: 21,565 MIL @ PHI: 18,423 BOS @ TOR: 27,107 MIN @ CIN: 28,904 CLE @ @ TB: 11,802 LAD @ ARI: 24,215 NYY @ LAA: 42,056 COL @ OAK: 12,125 And it may be a battle of first place clubs, but KC just isn't a team that brings the fans to the park. Considering the evidence that it usually takes multiple seasons for fans to return to a team that has sucked, this was actually a very respectable number for a Monday night.
This is THE point with attendance for the most part. Attendance tends to lag, generally. Offseason ticket sales of season ticket packages are the true base. My guess is that attendance next year will spike significantly if this team gets to the playoffs and performs well this season. But this year's season ticket base is built around a team that had performed historically bad for 3 - 4 seasons prior. Difficult to generate interest in season ticket plans for that in an offseason dominated by other sports.
Considering where the team has been the last few years in attendance, I'm sure the front office is doing back flips over 20K on a Monday night.
Attendance is down by about 1/3 from our 2004-2007 seasons when were averaging about 3 million fans per year. Here's hoping we can pack the stadium in August/September when we are making the stretch run and we sell out in the playoffs.
Thanks to dynamic pricing, they also made more off a sellout on Saturday against the Yankees than they did for any other sellout in the history of MMP.
WTF? It was a Monday night in a pre-ASG July game. If the Astros maintain this level of play well into August, watch the numbers soar. Besides, 20,000 for a Monday night is pretty damn good considering 90% of the people at the game live outside 30 minutes from the stadium.
That's a pretty big stretch... you're basically saying only 10% of game attendees are from the Galleria area, Bellaire, West U, Medical Center area, Memorial, River Oaks, Mid-town, and Downtown combined?
I figured once they pulled Correa up and Altuve got healthy, Margo's playing time would go down. Now he's having trouble getting starts. I suppose once Lowrie comes back, Margo's days might be numbered. I think the Astros don't have any more options on him.
