Carson Sands (Cole's older brother) was drafted in 2014 and signed for $1.1M to buy him out of a scholarship to FSU. I'd expect Cole to demand a similar amount, perhaps a bit higher. I'd say $1.25M could sign him, which would be about the 48th pick. His brother was ranked 53rd by Baseball America last year. Cole was ranked 79th this year. Either way, I think he's very signable.
Can someone explain to me how these contracts work? For instance, let's say Sands signs for 1 million. How many years is that for?
$1 million would be the signing bonus. After the player has signed, he would then be bound by a Uniform Player Contract, which lasts for 7 years and gives him a salary on top of the $1 million bonus. This is from MILB's FAQ page:
Keep in mind minor leaguers make next to nothing. I remember once reading it was like $1k/month. Unless the signing bonus is sizable, going to school may actually be a better financial decision for some players.
I wonder what the hold up is on the Daz Cameron signing. I would hope whatever is causing the delay get settled, and the hold-up doesn't go on for too long? I am beginning to wonder if the 5 million dollar figure thrown out there at first was a little more accurate than was later reported? I know we've talked about getting Cameron signed at a range of a 4 million dollar figure, but was that based on out of the air rumors or a rumor with a reliable source? Just talking logic, if Cameron was the 8th top prospect, the signing slot for that amount was 3.5 million dollars. If he could have been had for 4 million dollars, it would not have been out of the ordinary for a team to go half a million dollars over slot for him. In fact there could have been 4 to 5 teams that could have taken him and paid him close the 4 million dollars salary. I'm thinking that Cameron feels he was the top talent in this draft and contract negotiations should start in the 5 million dollars. After all, he was being touted as a potential #1 pick. So it could be plausible that in his mind, he is losing 3.5 million dollars even signing for the over-slot of 5 million from the 37th pick. Most teams probably did not see Cameron worthy of an over-slot deal in such an excessive amount. And the teams picking before 8, saw others as superior talent. But there was a consensus that Cameron should have gone in the top 15 at least. But leave it to a super agent to get his guy the 5+ deal and tell the team they actually ended up getting a 3.5 million dollar discount, and will thank him only after a few years!!!!
Not sure what is going on with Astros, but team picking 8th didn't have money for overslot due to FA signing causing them not to have a 2nd round pick to underslot. Team picking 9th wanted underslot in 1st so they could do overslot in 2nd rd. Teams 10 and below likely didn't have enough for overslot for 4 million. I'm surprised a team didn't take the risk later on that he would sign for less.

Since it is a competitive Balance A 1st round pick? I would hope so, but I don't know. If they can get the #38 pick next year, balking at Cameron's terms could be justifiable, and then the Astros could use their slot savings of 2.5 million to sign Sands, Baker and/or Sandoval. If the Competitive A 1st round picks are protected, then the Astros should have a bit of leverage over the Cameron Camp as well.
I believe there are still factors at play. Maybe Eshelman signing isn't official yet as far as getting his signature. Once that is signed and filed they can get Daz signed but I don't see him being in a hurry. My guess is they will get it done by this weekend. As others have said, the Astros have shown that they do their due diligence with agents before hand to gauge value. Also, considering Luhnow and Scott Boras seem to really have a decent relationship surprisingly it seems something has been worked out and the news will break fairly soon. I don't think it is something to worry over at this point.
Is Boras the advisor for any of the HS guys picked after the 10th round? Could see Boras leveraging the deal to make sure his guy gets the Cameron leftovers.
The hold up is that they don't want to repeat last year. They ar not up against a wall yet and they want to make sure they knowcexactly what they can offer to guys before they say anything. im sure they have a tentative agreement with him but until they have exact figures they aren't able to public ally say anything. My guess is it's pretty close to done but until it is official no one says a word.
