Is there much of a difference between Tri Cities/Greeneville/GCL? Meaning, why would someone go to one team and not the other? If the order you've placed them in is indicative of anything, it seems strange that Tucker is in GCL.

Any info is, as always, much appreciated!

Older players (college guys, esp. 4 year) will usually start out at a higher level. They're more advanced developmentally, so naturally they get to see higher competition earlier. Raw-er HS kids start low and slow.

Just the general rule, there are always exceptions (like if a college guy is changing positions or whatnot).

Also, shorter seasons in the aptly named "short season" leagues. If you're limiting innings on a young pitcher, for example, he'd go there.

Remember that this is by far the most baseball in a year that a lot of these kids have ever played in their lives. They do get worn out, and make a big adjustment to the daily grind in their second year.

Cool, I keep forgetting about the huge age differences between a lot of these guys.

    So the pecking order is:
    1. Tri Cities
    2. Greeneville
    3. GCL?

    uau

Greenville - Rookie league, short season
    Tri-City - SS, more advanced
    Quad Cities - Low A

There's also always "instructional ball" that happens at their spring training complex pretty much year-round. Then there's the Winter Leagues, and Fall Leagues, then there's "extended spring training".

I would not be completely shocked to see him in the Stros bullpen late this year. What's his workload been like, innings/game wise?

It would not be unheard of, but a bit shocking. Guessing that Riley Ferrell starts in A-, Quad Cities.

If Luhnow starts Riley Ferrell in AA, one can guess that Luhnow is wanting to bring him up this year.

He appeared 32 times and threw a total of 31.2 innings this season. Season high for IP in an outing was 2, which he did twice: on March 30 against Oklahoma State and last Thursday against Vanderbilt. He appeared in 5 straight games from May 8-15 (no games on the 10th, 11th, and 13th), throwing 4.1 innings.

It's not where he starts, it's where he's at a month from now. From the admittedly limited amount I saw him this year, I think his stuff would translate well to the bigs, and quickly.

Not that bullpen help is at the top of the Stros wishlist this year anyway, but another great arm never hurts....

What leverage did Ferrell have that made us pay over slot?

FWIW he was rated higher by most sites than where he was selected, so he was a bit of a steal at 79.

Round 3 Pick Riley Ferrell was rated higher than Round 2 pick Thomas Eshelman.

Maybe Eshelman signs for less than Ferrell?
