Couple things from this morning from Morey that will hopefully settle some hand wringing from the half of this board that doesn't understand basketball.
    • Says you essentially pick who is going to be the best pro aka BPA
    • Both picks are versatile guys, who can guard multiple positions, run the floor, athletic
    • Trying to play uptempo; build team like GS, says future of NBA
A couple points I'd also add that he didn't specifically mention, but I and several posters of this board have stated
    • A rookie pg at 18 will not help this team much and won't give you more than beverely
    • These players provide insurance against brewer, ariza and jones who some or all will be moved/let go to make room for a pg or pf upgrade

I doubt it will settle the hating. The same people who posted hate all year on DM and McHale immediately began throwing out the hate after selections. BPA is the best strategy for the Rockets at this point.

Let's see what the remainder of the offseason produces...and how these guys look in camp, but I'm optimistic.

I skimmed through your bullet points thinking Morey said them all. Wow Morey said we might trade Ariza.

Reread and got it right but your post got me. Your personal bullet points don't mean a whole bunch. Maybe Ariza is gone maybe not. Maybe we get a PF or a pg or maybe not. That's pure speculation

Either the PGS dudes at 790 suck or they have "don't even ask, becuz I won't even tell" guidelines from Morey.

    Llull? Team free agents? Etc.

good 1's are just as tough as good 5's for the having. at this point, i'd be happy to just have on board one of llull, lowry or lawson.

You can't say you want to build a team like GS and then keep signing/trading/drafting guys who can't shoot.

Best player available is simply the "Best Strategy", bar none!!!....

GM's have guys grouped in blocks of talent, and each team has their own player ranking. If there are two guys in the same group, get the guy that fills the need, but don't go down to the next block of talent to fill the need.

Too many teams have gotten themselves into trouble for filling needs as priorities. Competent GM's, have the guts to have a plethora of talent at one position and still play poker with other teams negotiating trades and other personnel moves.

I don't think that Morey has taken lesser trade return value, for having too much talent at one position.

Heck, most of the time, the BPA doesn't even pan out. So if a GM is picking based on need, they might as well throw that pick away or, keep their fingers crossed that the stars align in their favor.

I think he likes the aspect of being able to defend multiple positions more than the shooting lights out curry style. The Warriors were every bit as much about defense as they were the 3 pointer. They won even when the 3 wasn't falling.

All I have to say is that Morey better bring improve this team this summer. We need shooters on this team.

It is effective when you can switch everything on pick and roll. We played some of our best defense against GS when we had lineups that could do this

I think at a minimum we can get llull and bev, let brewer walk and/or smith jones

    Llull/bev
    harden/KJ
    Ariza/Dekkar
    dmo/(Jones/Smith/harrel?)
    howard/capella

Better roster than last year with minimal moves.

    Spot on

More and more teams are starting to roll out lineups of similar sized guys who don't really have dedicated positions.

Those of you that are still stuck on old fashioned positional requirements need to get with the times.

This IS the modern NBA. That is why Tyus Jones never made sense to me. You can roll with Chris Paul at 6'0" because he is just such a superior talent.... but you don't go with a 6'0" PG that is not especially quick or strong, especially next to James Harden.

Can't listen at work so I will be hoping for JR's stenography recap. He does so much heavy lifting. I'm really getting fat and lazy.

One thing that the two draft picks seem to address that this team has a real problem with is finishing around the basket. That was a real Achilles heel of this team (along with the free throw shooting). I wonder if that is something that might have given them a few bonus points with Morey and his staff.

I don't really keep track of college players, so I had to depend on video footage to see what everyone was going on about...and the first thought I had was "Why do so many want this guy, he is so short. Cue endless snarky jokes about Morey drafting a midget PG again"

of course, we see this every year. People go ape**** because Morey didnt draft who they thought the Rockets need, but months later things happen and then they realize just maybe Morey might actually know what he is doing.

    Like clockwork.

I wonder what the trade up opportunity was.

I bet it was Jones and the 18th and maybe something else in order to move up to 8 and get Justise Winslow.

No Terry at min? I would like to keep Terry. Good locker room guy and he showed he can produce at the 10-14 minute a game slot. Not at 25 like we had him. Hell he is one of our better three point shooters unless we somehow get a rifleman.

The second round pick is a low cost high reward project, which I believe is a sound strategy. All players outside the top 10 are a risk, especially in the 2nd round, so why not go with the kid who is a bundle of energy and athleticism?
