If Bregman signs around 5.4-5.5 million Astros will have 2.4 to 2.5 million while getting taxed 75% without not losing any high draft picks...(the point here is maybe pay the Tax if you have to, but to not lose any 1st rd draft picks)
With the extra revenue coming from the center field project, removing Tal hill etc...Astros could have the money to problaby pay the Tax this year and so on.
Another note...Clemens and Baker are 100% college bound and that's OK. But if we can get Sandoval and steal Sands away from Florida St, that would make Luhnow jeez even if the Astros have to pay the penalty...Astros have $864,400 extra to spend if the want to pay the tax money. With the Tal hill project and the attendance about to get a boost due to playoff run Astros might spend the tax for this year...Specially knowing that next year Astros slot money will be much lower due to the Astros winning ways. Sands is a very intriguing prospect because he is only 17 years old and has big time potential and comes from a talented baseball family. He also was drafted at 22 rd just like Mac Marshall was last yr.
They are paying millions out of their own pocket to do the work. It will be years before they recognize significant profit from that project.

Unfortunately, my window to edit the OP has closed. Bold - Pick has signed/intends to sign/has apparently agreed to terms/has given indications that he is leaning towards signing. 2016 spring training camp will be fun to watch...A who's who camp. Bregman,Eschelmann, and Farrell will likely be there.
http://m.mlb.com/news/article/130246508/2015-draft-signing-and-bonus-tracker Looks like we saved $154,200 on Person, bringing our total money saved thus far to $1,069,100.
wow...thats a big difference... I guess the price of waiting until your Senior Year to get drafted--no leverage...but only paying $10 K out of a possible $164 is downright robbery!
Any word on Daz? Know he can't sign until the top two are official, but any word on his current plans?
He'll sign, the question should be what his actual demand is. My hope is that he will sign for $4MM but once Boras sees the extra pool money the Astros have to play with I am nervous that he will bump it up to $4.5MM or more.
the Consensus appears to be that Bregman signs then Daz follows closely after...the Astros indicated they felt like they had a legitimatize shot at signing Daz--otherwise they wouldn't of drafted him and most believe that his offer as well as Bregman's were mutually agreed to (in some format) prior to them being drafted. Also, its been widely reported that Daz's bonus will be closer to $4M than the reported $5M he was seeking. If you look at all of the savings the Astros have accrued to date and add that to Bregman taking no more than $5.5 M (but probably less) then there is enough room to get Daz. Don't think much else has been said or speculated. Also, unlike many other HS Seniors who were drafted later, Daz hasn't indicated that he is going to college--a clear sign he is waiting on the (an) Astros offer.
Assuming Ferrell and Eshelman sign for slot, we will have no problem signing Daz. Even if Bregman demands $6MM, Astros will still be able to offer up to $4.8MM to Daz (when factoring in the [approximately] $860,000 overage). What we want is for Bregman to take $5.5MM and Daz to take $4MM. Then the team will have almost $1.5MM to go after one of the HS arms.
good point..but I wonder if they won't try and sign Bregman then Daz near-simultaneously so as to avoid publicizing the bonus money Bregman receives (thus keeping Boras in the dark during any final negotiations). Also, next year's draft is going to be much stronger and for Daz to get ~$4M + he'll have to be drafted in the top 5 next year(s)--quite a risk for him. The #5 slot is $4.1M while the #6 drops to $3.889...and after that even further. This is possibly his best shot at earning $4M or more without having to be drafted in the top 5.
