This issue with Carter is extreme highs and extreme lows. Sure, 1.000 OPS this month…but the potential for a 0.600 OPS next month is easily there. Plus, the HR are nice, but its difficult to swallow all the terrible at-bats, specially when you sometimes just need a smart at-bat to move a runner over. In any case, when he's on, its fun…when he's not, it's an absolute nightmare. Consistency would work better on this team, imo.
Exactly. Upside and possibly more consistency is hopefully what Singleton can give the club. Singleton should get another chance to see if he is legit. Karter doesn't deserve to have no competition at 1b at this point. The organization should be looking for better options at this point.
Hinch sure is choosing a strange battle here. I get the token "getting ejected to fire up your team" gimmick, but he's adamant that play shouldn't have been fan interference/an out. It's the rules, AJ.
Understood. But it seems like it would make sense to complain about being tired of him when he's having the 0.600 OPS month rather than when he's in the midst of a period of being great. No one on this team is any good at situational or consistent hitting and they all strikeout at obscene rates. But I would suggest that the guy with the 1.000 OPS this month is one of the ones least responsible for this team's struggles over the last several weeks.
If you're expecting Singleton to perform better than Carter has the last few weeks, you're pretty much delusional.
Singleton deserves another chance to prove he is legit. Karter like I said in previous post doesn't deserve to have no competition. Karter just gives away so many ABs. Letting fat pitches go by for called strikes and swinging at pitches 10 feet out of the strike zone. Karter can be utterly clueless at the plate. I mean that last AB was one of the worse ABs of the season.
Yes, but we might actually have a viable player waiting in the wings at 1B. I'd suggest Valbuena (yes, I know he hits HRs)…but we don't have anyone that can take that spot except for Lowrie, if/when he returns at 100% health. And if we are evaluating, it's only fair to look at the entire body of work…the 3 months that we have been playing baseball. 1 month of terrible, 1 month of slightly below average, and 1 month of very good baseball…that equals someone thats slightly below average. We can upgrade that position, just like we can upgrade a couple other positions…the difference is that we have a legit prospect at 1B waiting for another turn. We can't say that about 3B or C.
Why not Gattis? Gattis has been terrible all year aside from 2 great weeks. He's been even streakier than Carter. Carter has a higher OPS this year, a higher OPS over the last 3 years. He has a higher OPS with RISP, and with men on base this season, and over his career. Carter also has higher LD% over his career. I don't think either guy should be benched, but there is no good reason why Carter should be getting any more hate than Gattis.
Gattis isn't immune to the "hate" either…but, at least with Gattis, he's only played in the majors for 3 seasons, and this season is his worst of the bunch. Im hoping he can get back to his normal playing numbers. Carter, on the other hand, is just a mix of complete inconsistency…and the strikeout numbers are difficult to swallow, specially when the rest of the team is so inconsistent as well. I've gone through the love and hate scenarios with Carter enough to know that it's just never going to get better…rather, it will get better, but then it gets a worse…and the roller coaster ride continues. Gattis is still relatively new to the majors and has shown to be, not only better, but more consistent than he has been this season. Having said that, Gattis is another area that this team can improve upon, so Im not necessarily opposed to having him replaced either.
Probably because Carter plays in the field and... he stinks at it. If we saw Gattis stumbling around in the outfield and then sucking at the plate we'd probably see a lot of cut Gattis.
Carter has only been in the big league for seasons, and this is his worst of the bunch. Why are you only extending that courtesy to Gattis. Carters "normal" numbers over those 4 seasons are better than Gattis. Carter is the better player (not by much). People put way too much into his strikeouts. Hitting a lazy ground out or fly out is still an out. Carter has basically the same number of "productive outs" this season as Gattis, and 4 less double plays. I don't really love either player, nor do I think they should be benched. My only problem is the seemingly constant complaining about Carter as though he is some huge liability we have to tolerate. When in truth since April 21 he has the 2nd highest OPS on the team, but all people talk about is how much he strikes out.
Think about it Major They want someone who doesn't strike out And they ask for Singleton You are wasting your time, these guys have decided they don't want Carter and that's that It's not about success, it's about success their way Luhnow built this team on power, not plate discipline. Some people hate it. It sure has worked though!
Carter has almost 1600 career AB compared to the almost 1000 AB that Gattis has…that's 60% more, which is pretty significant. Gattis had a WAR of 2.2 last year compared to Carter's 1.9, despite playing in almost 40 games less. Gattis had a better season last year than Carter's "break out" year. And a lazy fly out or a ground out is not the same as a strike out, when you have a runner on 3rd with less than 2 outs. In any case, they both leave something to be desired. And the reason Singleton's name comes up is because he has potential to be the long term answer at 1B, while I don't see Carter as that guy.
