What a ****ing bigot. I hope they throw the book at him. Oh, and I'm sure the sexual orientation of the victim had nothing to do with the incident (insert "roll-eyes" here). That he hollared "**** you, f*****!" was simply coincidence and due to "road rage." Yeah, right.

And that would look different than just any two guys walking down the street why? Do you think gay guys wear a sign or something?

Yes. All the "gay guys" I know where large placards, front and rear, everytime they go out for a stroll.

Mincing behavior seems evident in many but that's not their fault. Everybody deserves a chance at happiness. It's sad that many can't let people be if they don't harm anyone else. I know the excuses about influencing, but there's is absolutely no chance sexuality can be influenced. Nada, zilch.

Ah, well that's odd, I guess if they were wearing their placards then this guy would have known instantly that they were gay so maybe you have a point and it wasn't just a random argument on the street....but I hear those can happen in Austin

In all seriousness, this is an incredibly biased article that only tells one side of the story...and probably glosses over exactly what happened leading up to the altercation, not that it REALLY matters but point is, you run your mouth to random people on the street and sometimes bad things happen. It's extremely unlikely that the sexual orientation of the guy that got hit was even known let alone a factor. It's still assault, and the guy should be punished but let's not try to make this into something it most likely is not. There's plenty of legitimate examples of gay-bashing out there, you don't have to invent them.

Maybe he had a reason to do this. We don't know the full story yet. Perhaps he was right after all?

Obviously, that was his gay lover and he just found out he was cheating on him. Love makes you do crazy things.

It's ok to have doubt that he knew the guy was gay and therefore this is a hate crime. It's possible he didn't, or it wasn't a factor.

Saying its "extremely unlikely", however, even when the person was with his partner and a gay slur was used and there was no other obvious motive, seems more denialistic than skeptical.

A slur is a slur. If he yelled "**** you, r****d", would that make it any less significant?

There are a lot of common slurs still used (and seemingly accepted) that belittle a group of people. Except fat asses, they can help that.

People like you scare me. This is why I am very opposed to elevated punishment for things like "hate crimes".

Its very difficult to prove he punched him because he was gay unless he admitted so.

Punching a gay guy because he made you angry is not a hate crime.
Punching a gay guy sole for the reason of being gay is.

I'm not sure what I said that you're disagreeing with. I said its OK to have doubt (and therefore, to doubt it was a hate crime). Maybe my sentence construction was ambiguous.

Agreed. Their facebook presence, especially in Germany, is pure click bait. I had to "unlike" it although the managing director is a friend/acquaintance of mine. I recently met Arianna Huffington and found her interesting and impressive, though.

This is why I make sure to wear a sign around my neck that says "straight" whenever taking a stroll with any of my bros

If you actually read that, the facts show that the guy was just a violent *******....kind of what I thought and was saying all along.

There was an "obvious motive" someone yelled out at him, he yelled back, literally the first thing the man said was "F you f*****" I doubt he had made a full analysis of the situation before screaming that in response to someone b****ing about his driving.

The guy was just a violent ******* road raging and someone challenged him which led to a fight. This isn't a gay issue, it's a violent ******* issue.

C'mon, give a guy a break? We all get testy when a gay guy yells at us for almost running them over. They are sooooooo annoying. Probably they were holding hands and talking in that "gay" voice. He was just trying to knock some sense into him.

In all seriousness, I never liked the "hate crime" label. It's nearly impossible to prove that someone acted out of hate or bigotry unless they admit so. That's the first problem. Secondly, why should a hate crime be worse than another? Is it a lessor crime for me to murder a strange on the street for $10 than for being x race? How does giving a person a stiffer sentence for being filled with hate going to do anything?

The guy committed a crime. He should be punished. And yes, as a society we need to condemn the slur and attitudes of this man. But punishing him should be for the crime he committed, not for being a douchebag.
