What's the difference b/t naming something a hate crime vs terrorist attack? Obviously, it's both by nature, but there got to be some difference in how they are handle and the responses to them? For example, hate crimes get higher penalty and doesn't it also involve DOJ? Terrorists acts, I think also involve the federal government in financial support (wasn't there an act after 911 to do so) and maybe a federal government response and not just local or state level...
Except that we know, even within American culture, states with higher gun ownership rates have higher homicide rates. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/13/gun-violence-study_n_3924063.html According to a fact sheet from the Harvard School of Public Health: Our review of the academic literature found that a broad array of evidence indicates that gun availability is a risk factor for homicide, both in the United States and across high-income countries. Case-control studies, ecological time-series and cross-sectional studies indicate that in homes, cities, states and regions in the US, where there are more guns, both men and women are at higher risk for homicide, particularly firearm homicide.
Well of course he didn't, he only engages in debates that have something to do with black people getting killed. Discussing something related to a shooting on an Army base is beneath him.
I'm curious as to if there were any other murders between the time he left the church and the time he was caught.
I had forgot about the wrangling between the Army, the White House and Congress over whether to call the Fort Hood Shooting Terrorism. In this case though I would still say that if all that matters is that the suspect get the death penalty then why should we continue to call Tsarnaev a terrorist when he has also been sentenced to death?
If it makes you feel better, we can call the Boston bombing a hate crime. Choosing to torture the English language doesn't really change what act happened or how it should be punished.
I'm also fine with saying they were nuts for following a religion. Whatever makes people happy about how their psychos are labeled.
Meanwhile the Confederate flag flies high and proud over the SC state capital building. But this had nothing to do with race.
Lets consider a gun law that could be madsimilar to vehicles. If there is a change of ownership, you have to register that with a DMV. Otherwise, if a vehicle is registered in your name damages or hurts somebody, the OWNER of the vehicle is responsible for the damage regardless of who was driving. In addition, the law requires that the driver has a valid drivers license, otherwise, additional charges may occur. Simple right? Use the same law for guns. Do you think the uncle would have freely gave him the gun knowing that he could be responsible for any damage? If he decides to go ahead and change ownership and we have laws that tests the person psychologically, abiltity to handle a gun, etc before you can own one, do you think that would have prevented it? Those laws I proposed are simple and it could have easily stopped this incident.
Surprising, for once I agree. I think there's a political component to terrorism - an underlying effect for power or control of a region. Or an effort to destabilize. It goes beyond hate but may include hate. But I don't see a political aim here. Other than inflicting hurt and fear, what was his goal?
If he had written a manifesto beforehand or was attached to a group that claimed responsibility for the action I think it would be different but as I've said, it doesn't really matter, he's a mass-murdering b*stard that should be put down like the animal he is.
For me that wouldn't change anything. I think the assumption is that people who think like he does can't be mentally healthy, but at least IMO he should be punished for his actions anyway. I just don't think there can be a mitigating circumstance for mass-murder.
Not really. In fact it makes perfect sense. This ******* grew up in a racist environment and state that to this day celebrates it's racist heritage. What's really sick is how the Fox news crowd (and apparently some on this board) that are trying to twist this into some kind of religious persecution thing.
