As much fun as it is to fantasize about the Astros getting compensation...it will not happen.

This all has to do with punishing the Cardinals and nothing to do with giving the Astros a prize for being victims.

Im thinking a hefty fine and a year or two worth of draft picks taken away from them.

It's not about getting a prize for being a victim.
It's about monetary compensation for lost net worth or revenue.

Someone stole information from the Astros. Released that information to purposely damage the Astros brand.
Think about the Sony leak. You think Sony hasn't lost brand value over that? You think the person responsible wouldn't be on the hook for millions of dollars in damages?

Except MLB is not the person responsible. The Astros can sue the Cardinals or their employees, but it's not the league's responsibility to compensate the Astros.

That's definitely true. But any compensation should strictly be monetary. It's not fair to the rest of the league if the Astros get some sort of competitive advantage on the baseball side out of this. Although I guess you could argue that Astros having more money in itself is competitively advantageous since it's a non-salary capped league but that's always been around.

the cheaters could leverage the ill-gotten info to

prevent Astro from trading a player to Cardinal's competitors, and vise versa

That's criminal but if you really get convictions of 5 people what's a $50,000,000.00 restitution? It's nothing because there's no way the Cardnials will be hit by this. The employees will personally.

The fact that the FEDS and DOJ got involved suggests that they already have strong evidence implicating St. Louis employees...And would love to see how hard of a punishment MLB is prepared to levy on these tools...

agree...while the Astros shouldn't and won't be compensated with say more draft picks, the Cardinals could certainly have picks taken away or forced to sit out a draft all together...that would be a pretty effective deterrent--and doesn't hurt the other teams (in a way, everyone moves "up one spot" without STL on the draft board)

Lol...just because he proclaims the allegations don't reflect who they are as an organization doesn't make it so.

The hacks cause irreparable harm to the astros. Not only did they jack all the IP, they got a clear understanding of everything the astros (specifically) are thinking.

Not to mention the public embarrassment they decided to cap it off with. As true and funny as this tweet is

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">A year ago, Astros were terrible team, botched draft, didn’t protect their servers. Now? Good team, right about Aiken, robbery victims.</p>&mdash; David Cameron (@DCameronFG) <a href="https://twitter.com/DCameronFG/status/610838192577712129">June 16, 2015</a></blockquote>
    <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

the kick to the balls this caused to the astros was huge. It gave every writer int he country to attack the astros like garbage.

Punishment should be opening up the Cardinals network for other teams and their emails for public scrutiny.

Yup. What if David Robertson or Ryan Vogelsong or some big name foreign free agent decided not to sign with the Astros due to their public perception at the time? What if teams at the trade deadline last year refused to answer the phone when Luhnow called due to perceived security issues with the Astros database? I know in the end it's all small grapes, but I'm sure the legal team representing the Astros will bring up all of these scenarios.

Interesting that there is no mention of the Astros in his comments. I guess in some form, that would/could be an admission of guilt. I'd think he'd at least mention the victims in addition to making his team sound like the victims.

Oh look, the Chronicle still found a way to criticize the Astros during this.

@_ToddStone: Cardinals GM is talking about doing the right thing. But Astros execs aren't talking at all. They didn't do anything wrong. Why the foxhole?
