This... It cheapens the anthem to hear so much. Moreover, it is like an American Idol contest every time we have to hear it.
They should be able to do what they wanna do!!! Here some questions for you: - How is putting your hand over your heart going to set an example for the youth? There are plenty of things NBA players do (with the whole NBA-Cares and all the other various charities they are a part of or even basketball camps) that are actually worthwhile. Things like that might have an actual positive impact on the lives of some and those are things that young people should aspire to. - What is happening with the US and you are asking this because of the national anthem? There are so many things going on in the US that are just horrible and in all honesty shouldn't be happening in 'the land of the free' (major racial issues; the treatment of minorities in general; how the police conduct themselves, mainly towards minorities..etc - just naming a few things here)...and your concern is people 'not showing respect' during the national anthem? - MAYBE that is EXACTLY what is wrong with the US! People are concerned about things that really don't matter at all and are ignoring issues that actually need to be tackled.
I always find it ridiculous that they sing the anthem before every game. I understand why you do it when national teams play against each other. Do children really have to say the Pledge of Allegiance every day in school?That is ridiculous. Good way to brainwash your children. I really do not understand these idiotic nationalistic ceremonial procedures. This worshipping of a country is not good IMHO (that being said I do not approve of any worshipping).
Sorry deb4 but the culture in our country is changing. Sadly people don't WANT to hear the National Anthem. As you see in posts people are so easily offended. They feel bad for people that must endure a song for a few minutes that represents the fact that the land they live/work in was made free so many years ago. The culture is moving towards no longer valuing patriotism. Now if we’d play the latest top song and jump off of trampolines for dunks or showed a cool video instead of the National Anthem then that wouldn’t offend anyone. The world is full of people that only care about themselves. They have decided it’s not worth it to pause for a moment and reflect on the fact, despite all our problems, we are about to ENJOY a basketball game with players from all over the world, fans from all over the world, in peace and safety all TOGETHER. To you good sir I say a heartfelt thanks and God bless you and your family. And if that offended some of you I don’t care, get over yourself.

I am not offended by them playing the national anthem. I just find it ridiculous. But if they want to play it be my guest, however do not expect me to acknowledge it, sing with it or place my hand on my heart (the same goes for the anthem of my own country). Again, when your national team is playing against another national team it is different. In that case I do understand playing your anthem since we are having a game between countries.
I remember way back in the day when some of my Hispanic classmates would say "I pledge allegiance to the flag of United States of Mexico..." Got a giggle out of it. I guess forcing people to do something doesn't necessarily turn them patriotic.
To a mindset like that, not agreeing with the view is tantamount to disrespecting it. So much of America's minds have been trained to exist in the "With us or against us" mentality.
Things that don't really matter at all? Yes, it matters. I never compared it to any other serious problems in the world. It's just like telling your child that he doesn't need to say "Please or Thank You" because he volunteers at the youth club, and there are more horrible things going on in the world, so manners don't mean anything. You are absolutely right! That is exactly why people have this attitude. If their friends or family scoff at traditions of our country, then they more than likely will as well. That is why there are people on here that think it is silly and ridiculous. Nobody turns patriotic by feeling forced to do anything. It comes from family values and the values of people they are influenced by. It shouldn't feel forced.

So if I put my hands behind my back and my head down in silence, I'm not showing respect? Traditions from all cultures will eventually die and become new traditions, especially as our world becomes more diverse and people mesh multiple traditions. I wouldn't mistake a tradition for respect. People still respect the anthem. I would be more upset if people were playing grab ass vs. simply just not having their hand over their heart
I think we should get rid of it. It's cringe-worthy to me because I'm always worried about the singer screwing it up.
