I'm too scared to ask for an answer in this thread because it could go terribly wrong, but maybe there's a link you guys can point me to?

I'm looking for a decent list of the major deviations from the book that do not include any spoilers or possible spoilers.

I've browsed a few and most have spoilers from the books but at this point I'm not sure how much that applies anymore but I would proceed with a lot of caution. Entertainment weekly has a great section that deals with that.....

Honestly if you wait one week you will be completely in the clear on spoilers. After the season finale the book material will be almost entirely exhausted, everything moving forward will be brand new to everybody. Off the top of my head Arya has some book material left that they may or may not use, but that's about it.

A recurring feature article? Or a 1-off in a recent issue? If so which? I ask for direct links because searching for this stuff blindly can result in spoilers.

Don't do it. You're just asking for trouble at this point if you're really concerned about spoilers. There are a couple of major things left, but as one other poster said, you should be in the clear after the season finale unless they decide to save those things for next season which seems pretty unlikely at this point, but who knows.

Be aware though, that once the season ends and you start looking more into information on the series or source material, you will be open to all kinds of fan theories, many of which seem very plausible, but could still spoil things for you in a different sense although they are at this point merely speculation.

Or you could end up like justtxyank, who learned about the deviations and was disappointed by the alterations the show made.

    So much this.

If you like the plot in the show I'd just leave the book spoilers alone. There's really no good that can come with it but there is potential disappointment.

FYI, I still like the show, just disappointed in aspects of it.

Nah, I can embrace difference. I'm aware of the deviations in Walking Dead. I'm aware of all the deviations in Marvel films. I like to learn about both sides.

The TV producers have reeeeeally telescoped Books 4 and 5 of "A Song of Ice and Fire". It seems they're very serious about finishing the series in 7 seasons, maybe 8.

Which would mean the TV show will be ruining the books, but oh well....GRRM and all his getting-sidetracked (writing an episode per season of the show until THIS season; that damned History of Westeros and Essos book, for which he wrote lots of text, and came out last October, and no one bought...)

Some events in Books 4 and 5 were already incorporated into last season.

The grisly death in the last episode is apparently going to be in Book 6 "Winds of Winter", on bookshelves....sometime in the next year. Probably.

There was a whole gigantic subplot involving the Iron Islands which they may revisit next year, not to mention a surprise character, but given the way the TV producers practically ruined Dorne (with the exception of Tyene's chesticles), maybe they should leave well enough alone. They seemed weary of following a new storyline.

Reading some of these comments is like wading through the Walking Dead threads. It makes me wonder why some even watch the show. Criticism is fine, but some of this stuff is getting way nitpicky.

Bout the only problem I had with the last episode was Daenerys' exit. Yeah even for a big budget show, it's still a tv show so it was probably near impossible to get right. So maybe they shouldn't have even tried. It probably would have been much more dramatic had they shown her fly off from the perspective of those on the ground and cut it there. But that is only a very minor complaint. It didn't ruin the end at all.

And I can't believe there's still shock at some of these death scenes. This series has been a nonstop flow of decadence, debauchery and gruesome deaths. Shireen burned alive at the stake is probably not even the most horrible. I mean damn, the red wedding we see Talisa get stabbed purposefully and directly in her stomach to kill her and her unborn child.

It's gonna be interesting to see the fallout from Shireen's death. How Davos reacts upon discovering what happened? He obviously did not trust Melisandre and maybe a part of him thought Shireen wasn't safe, but I don't think he ever thought Stannis would allow that to happen. Not his own daughter. And does Jon find out about the ritual and does that affect his allegiance to Stannis? And what of the soldiers? They allowed it to happen but I think more out of desperation than anything. And I'm betting if they continue to fight for him, it's only out of fear and not respect. And then Selyse, always thinking in all Stannis' actions that it's for the Lord of Light and justified. But then seeing her own daughter die like that, her reaction was a bit heartbreaking despite me pretty much hating her character. This season we saw some of the positive attributes of Stannis, so I think it was important to remind audiences that he is, like most everyone else, a deeply flawed character. And yet he didn't make that decision lightly. He truly believes he belongs on the throne and will do anything to get there, not because he wants to because he has to. So her burning at the stake wasn't something done lightly and wasn't done for shock value. Honestly I think the only death that has been completely pointless was Ros.

There is a huge difference between TWD and GOT. GOT has (high) standards. TWD has no standards.

Might 'spoil' the books, but not ruin them. I started on the show and the read ahead in the books. The books can rob the show of its drama, but I don't think the inverse is true. The books are much richer and more complicated that it doesn't matter as much that you know what's going to happen.

I disagree. I have read all the books that where available before the show started. And am up to date with the books. But if i already know what is going to happen becauae of the show i will not read the books.

That being said i think martin will not finish the books.

I read the books after watching Season 1. Knowing what would happen didn't affect my enjoyment of the first book at all. As good as the show is, the books are better.

Like hell he won't. He has a contract to write seven books. His publisher would stomp his ass if he breached the contract.

He has millions of readers waiting to see what becomes of these characters. Whether or not the show robs us of the suspense won't keep Martin from finishing the novels.

There are storylines that are completely different in the books than in the show....storylines that are completely left out. For me, having read the books didn't "ruin" my enjoyment watching the show and knowing what happens in the show won't "ruin" my enjoyment reading the books.
