I have been a huge NIN over the years. It wasn't until maybe 5 or so years ago that Radiohead finally supplanted them as my favorite band. My favorite would have to be The Downward Spiral just because every track is brilliant, but Pretty Hate Machine and the The Fragile aren't far behind. I also think that Year Zero is a fantastic album and doesn't get nearly the attention that it should. With Teeth and The Slip are my least favorites.

Me as well. Downward Spiral was a perfect mindf*** album. It was clean and deliberate yet still maintained the nice angry energy of nin. it was what i wanted from reznor at the time when it was released. i bought broken a year before i think in 1993 and i was looking forward to Downward Spiral having the same energy but interlaced with breaks. Exactly what trent delivered. Broken: completely raging f*** all. beautiful work. nice surprise at tracks 98 and 99 too. the first time i played it in my car, i thought my cd player was possessed because it just started skipping tracks really fast. lol. Pretty Hate Machine: Classic album. Maybe the very first CD that "wow"d me on every song. it sounds a bit dated now but i will always hold a special place in my heart for it. The Fragile: some really good songs mixed with some mediocre ones With Teeth: more of the same except the good songs got scarcer. The Slip: meh Ghosts I-IV, Fixed: I didn't get it. maybe way over my head or my taste just branched in a different direction from what reznor was doing. The guy is old. He's been doing this anger rock/controlled chaos thing since the mid 80's. It just seemed forced and not so genuine. I felt like he shouldve released an album called LOST because he seemed completely lost as far as what he wanted to accomplish musically after The Fragile imo. trent was the perfect balance of kick@ss and intellect though. that's why i never get tired of listening to nin.
This is really hard question as depending on my mood, I could go with any 3 choices of: Pretty Hate Machine The Downward Spiral Broken PHM, to me, is really a dance album and maybe the closest that Reznor got to a true industrial sound (says the so-called industrial elitists). Downward Spiral was a lot more rockish and has the immortal song, "Closer". "Broken", despite being an EP is one of the angriest and most aggressive things you will ever heard - it also has 2 great hidden tracks. So, today I voted Downward Spiral but tomorrow might vote one of the other two. I have The Fragile and never could get into it and pretty much stopped caring about future NIN releases after that one.
quoting my own post...lol Listening to Year Zero again for the first time in a loooong time...it seems as though it gets better each time. Trying to steer my 13 year old daughter toward good stuff like this...but she (and seemingly every other 13 year old girl friend of hers) only wants Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and other pop-emo stuff. Teenage daughters smh...will be glad when she learns what good music is.
how did I miss this thread?!?!? One of the things I've always wanted to do is see them live. They came to SA 2 yrs ago but I had an exam the next day. It would have to be downworld spiral for me. I was going through a tough time and the album just really eased me through it.

Trent did a remix of Immigrant Song for the movie, Girl with a dragon tattoo, which I thought was pretty ****ing good.
It doesn't surprise me that Pretty Hate Machine is the clear winner, but my vote certainly goes to The Fragile. Just simple beauty.
My favorite band of all time, I've seen them more than 20 times live. If I had to choose a single album it would be The Fragile - it just takes you across every aspect of their catalog. Somewhat Damaged is my favorite song of theirs of all time, with The Becoming from The Downward Spiral a close second. The last show I saw them play was November 2013 in Las Vegas at the Hard Rock... The only two albums of theirs I have (or had, I don't know where they are anymore) are(were) With Teeth and Year Zero. They were OK IIRC. Haven't listened to them in years. What album do yall recommend I look into getting?
Here is a rundown in chronological order by release date. Pretty Hate Machine is the perfect album to sum up the transition from the 80s to the 90s. Synth meets pop, meets metal. Broken is a melt your face off power LP. Make sure you stick around for the hidden tracks (tracks 98 and 99). The Downward Spiral is Trent's most popular album with the "I wanna **** you like an animal" song, also known by it's real name as "Closer." Strangely enough, it is one of my least favorite Nine Inch Nails songs, especially on this amazing album. It is a great song played live though. The Fragile is a masterpiece, and technically probably Trent's best work. It is a double-album that covers literally every sound imaginable. The tracks are so dense that many of them have upwards of 30+ individual tracks layered on top of one-another. Listen with headphones if possible, the level of detail is astounding. . The Fragile was also the last album Trent wrote on a steady diet of cocaine, Budweiser and tequila. His tone changes dramatically after this album due to sobering up. He also started body building and became Mega-trent after this one. With Teeth is the most "poppy" album of them all, with a lot of head bobbing tracks. It is a drastic, yet surprisingly great change from all of his previous works. This is probably my favorite post-Fragile era album. Ghosts I–IV is a collection of more than 30 instrumental tracks, many of which lead to the fantastic award winning scores of The Social Network (Oscar for best score), Girl with a Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl. They are great soundtracks to your day, I listen to it all the time when I am working and/or lounging (as with other soundtracks as well). Year Zero is a unique concept album that tells the story of a not so future dystopia. If you have an hour or two at work, I highly recommend researching the ARG that went with it. It is an extremely edgy album, and the only of of Trent's album that doesn't focus on his own pain, feelings, world, etc. It is a "fictional" narrative, that sadly seems to be coming more true every year. The Slip is probably his most radio friendly album, and one that Trent actually released for free as a download. But don't let that fool you, this album is full-fledged-awesomeness. Like most of Trent's work, it has a nice balance of pop, instrumental and face-melting. Hesitation Marks is a throwback to the Trent of old, going more metal than funk - although there are plenty of both. A highlight of this album was the tour where Trent was backed by amazing soul singers. From this point on I imagine Trent's works are going to vary along with his moods, as he is now married and has two kids. When I listen to Nine Inch Nails, I usually do it on an album by album basis, rather than a shuffle - as there is a clear narrative and flow to the albums that is probably only matched by the likes of Tool.
