You listen to him because he can help you win a title. If people were listening to him only because they thought he's going to be there the next year, they are idiots.
My bad. I thought you might also be a Blazers fan since you are a Duck and most Blazers fans are favorable towards Monty Williams.
Too bad for Stephen A Smith who was prepared to go on a rant about not enough black coaches in the NBA...
Sure but the Golden State style is no more a style than the Phoenix run-and-gun which was the envy of the league back in the day but no team had a spare Steve Nash to replicate. Similarly, the isn't another backcourt duo as dynamic as the splash bros and the Warriors style is a product of the availability of such players. I don't see how Gentry transfers that style around the core of Davis and Co. The Pelicans will have to discover their own style and identity best suited to the talents of it best player and not the other way around.
As others have already pointed out to you, plenty of assistant coaches IN MANY sports have been in the same situation and it wasn't a big deal. The goal is to win a championship, I'm pretty sure Alvin is mighty interested in trying to win a championship as an assistant with the Warriors. NBA Championships don't grow on trees. Are you a former NBA player? Did you hear this from former or current NBA players? I'm pretty sure it's not a turn off when AN ASSISTANT COACH gets a head coaching job for the upcoming season, while a team is still in the playoffs. It might be a turn off if the actual head coach gets and takes another job with another team while still actively in a season/playoffs with his team. This isn't that situation. Seriously I'm sure you were just trolling, you definitely didn't even believe what you wrote. Good one Liberon :grin::grin:
Very surprised Gundy didn't get the job. It's been a while since he's coached but I still thought he'd get any coaching gig once he put himself back on the market. I wonder if he's ever going to return to the sidelines.
I think his style of coaching is completely obsolete. Every team he coached was back in the dominant post play era. Yao and Ewing are long gone and that style of offense is no longer in use.. He'd have to adjust to the pick and pop offense of the modern era. I think that was one of the most painful things to watch about the Rox when he coached while the league was already transitioning to a totally guard oriented league.. I mean Yao was great and all but that was some ugly slow half court basketball where a huge giant laying it soft into the basket was so boring....
In other words: An expert is worth listening to as long as he is with your organization. As soon as he changes the organization, he is no longer an expert? What a bunch of crap.
I think you're oversimplifying things when you assume a highly intelligent, experienced NBA head coach cant find a way to adapt.
And the Rockets ugly half court basketball was....the exact same when they switched him for Adelman. It was Yao that was slow. Van Gundy actually always encouraged his players to play fast and get into their sets quickly, if you bothered to follow back then.

It is a distraction along with questions in faithfulness and commitment. I'm just saying it how it is to most people. It's like I'm working for Race team Audi as a coordinator but I'm got a gig with Race team Lexus and will start in 2 months for them.
Scalabrine pretty much credited 100% of GSW's success on the defensive end last season to Erman. Pairing him w/ Gentry seems like a good look for them. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">ESPN sources say Pelicans putting on full-court press to hire Darren Erman as defensive guru for new coach Alvin Gentry's coaching staff</p>— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) <a href="https://twitter.com/ESPNSteinLine/status/605592034020188160">June 2, 2015</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Erman was dismissed as part of the Mark Jackson storm in Golden State late last season, but vet assistant regarded as an ace defensive mind</p>— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) <a href="https://twitter.com/ESPNSteinLine/status/605592442214051840">June 2, 2015</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Erman had strong impact on team D in both Boston & Golden State and is seen as ideal addition to complement Gentry's offensive specialties</p>— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) <a href="https://twitter.com/ESPNSteinLine/status/605593370287742978">June 2, 2015</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Yet another high quality assistant coach the Rockets passed on luring to the sideline.... Adams, Malone, Gentry and others were available or are available and the Rockets don't pursue... PJ Carlisimo is another.
No, you're saying how it is to you. Note that no one has agreed with you - that doesn't equate to "most people". Except it's not.
