Its just part of the game... just like why some pitchers can be elite in the 7th-8th innings, but often fall apart when asked to pitch the 9th with a save on the line. Ask Gattis to make that sort of contact on an 0-2 count, in the 2nd inning with nobody on, and you get him swinging/missing by miles.
