This, you get rid of the greyhound and get rid of the one guy that could consistently finish in a fastbreak opportunity.

For you guys who dont want Brewer back, just go watch the comeback against the Clippers and see if you still feel the same way.

I dont know how the dollar to dollar works for Josh with detroit money... but i figure even at the full mle, who are we gonna get for that that would be as impactful (esp w D12 chemistry..)

If retaining Brewer/JT is 'over the cap' money that doesnt matter (cept to Les' wallet) - hold onto them...

Match PBev - again if its over the cap $ anyway....

Leaving 18/32/TJones/Lull rights/KPap nonguar/Prigs part g/NJohnson to turn into a pg to split w PBev....

I'd love to have both of them back in the right roles and at the right prices. Brewer and Smith are inconsistent, but as long as they're coming off the bench it's not the end of the world. Terry would be a nice elder statesman on a veteran minimum contract.

I think the only one we're in real danger of losing is Brewer. No one is going to want to pick up JET, and Smith has few options even if he wanted to leave (he's no good on rebuilding teams, and he's too big of a risk to bring on to a contender).

Rockets can offer McDaniels a qualifying offer of about $1.05 million without needing another cap exception. Non-Bird rights for league minimum players allows teams to sign them for GREATER of 120% or applicable minimum salary + $200k.

I want to say we should keep Daniels n Smoove at vet minimum. I think Brew will want more $, think his transition O is good but takes to many risks on D and it was suspect at times in playoffs. I'd love to keep him but at a reasonable cost. Terry don't think we should keep unless Rox have given up on nickJ.

    Ok , the 120% is ~$608k ...

I'm assuming the "applicable min+200k" is based upon tenure in the league !? And that this figure is where you get the $1.05m number ?

Found this chart on RealGM - http://basketball.realgm.com/nba/info/minimum_scale

Appears that second year players min salary is $845,059 so add the $200k and there's what they can offer McDaniels while being over the cap & not dipping into available exceptions.

Can other teams over the cap offer the same $845,059+200k or simply the $845,059?

I wonder if that $1.045m is enough to get him to sign on the dotted line or if other teams would be willing to pony up significantly more $$ ?? Will be interesting to see how this situation plays out.

Teams over the cap can always use their MLE to try to pry McDaniels away from the Rockets. But assuming all cap exceptions have been used elsewhere, those teams cannot give K.J. that extra $200k over the 1-year veteran's minimum that Houston can via its qualifying offer. Still, that shouldn't give us too much comfort about some team being able to offer him a nice chunk of change.

At this point for each of these players, it should be more about winning a championship than getting max money. If they are not on that page, then they will be playing elsewhere next season for more money I'm guessing. It would be nice to have them back. If I had to go with only one, then it would be keep Smith.

What to do ... what to do?: It's easy to take shots at Dwight Howard -- and, many do. He says and does strange things sometimes. But he averaged 16.4 ppg, 14.0 rpg and 2.3 bpg in the playoffs, shooting 57 percent from the floor. And he went for 20 and 21 in the Rockets' biggest game of the season -- winning Game 6 of the conference semis at Los Angeles, against the Clippers. And he performed in the playoffs after missing half of the season with a knee injury.

No matter the gifs or the Twitter jokes, Howard is still a formidable presence in the middle, and he was just as responsible as James Harden for the unexpected grit the Rockets showed in the playoffs. As a result, Houston is well-poised for another long run next season -- with a couple of caveats.

Howard will be 30 early next season, with 11 seasons of NBA pounding on his knees and back, both of which have required surgery in recent years. Constant monitoring of the wear and tear on him -- and getting a competent backup -- will be priorities for the Rockets for the last two years of Howard's deal. There are a few unrestricted quality bigs who could fill the bill -- Brandan Wright and/or Kosta Koufos come to mind -- but the Rockets have a lot of decisions to make about the rest of the roster first, with point guard looming above everything.

Patrick Beverley will be coming back from torn ligaments in his wrist that shelved him for the final 11 regular season games and all of the playoffs. He'll be 27 in July. He is a pit bull on defense. Yet, injuries kept Houston from realizing its dream of having a healthy Beverley, Ariza and Howard on the floor this season for long stretches, providing on-ball disruption, weakside anticipation and rim protection.

Beverley will be a restricted free agent this summer and he hasn't been able to stay healthy for two seasons. We saw what the Dallas Mavericks did last summer in gumming up the Rockets' works, putting an insane offer sheet on Chandler Parsons that Houston did not match. Well, Dallas still has a ton of cap room and needs a starting point guard. And owner Mark Cuban just plain ol' doesn't like the Rockets. It should be a concern.

And whether or not the Mavs make a run at Beverley, the Rockets will have to decide if he's the long-term solution at the point.

They've eyed Rajon Rondo in the last couple of years, up to the minute the Boston Celtics sent him to Dallas, and he's obviously free now. The Houston Chronicle reported before the playoffs that Rondo remained at the top of the Rockets' list in the offseason. But having witnessed his meltdown firsthand in their first-round series against the Mavs, how confident can the Rockets remain that Rondo is still a top point guard -- regardless of his friendship with Smith?

    Speaking of which ...

Smith was one of the Rockets' best players down the stretch and in the postseason, leading Houston's improbable Game 6 comeback in L.A. while Harden remained on the bench for all but a few seconds of the fourth quarter. Smith came off the bench without complaint, developed a quick rapport with Brewer, played off of Harden effectively and shot ... wait for it ... 38 percent on threes in the playoffs!

He can name his price, sitting on the $28 million the Detroit Pistons paid him in December to go away. He and the team seem comfortable with each other, but bidness is bidness. The Rockets already have $57 million committed to next season on their top nine guys, and that doesn't include cap holds on their first-round pick, Smith and Terry, or Brewer's $4.9 million player option.

If Brewer opts in and Smith can be retained for mid-level type money, the Rockets might be able to cobble together a deal with some of their reasonably-priced depth. Jones, the emerging Capela and the first from New Orleans could make for an interesting trade dish. Would all that be enough to entice Denver into talking about trading Ty Lawson?

You can bet, sure as there will be another "Real Housewives" spinoff next season, that Rockets owner Daryl Morey won't sit on the sidelines. He's genetically incapable of it. Blame science.

    BimaThug...

What's prigs contract look like? I was wondering if he could be traded with k.pap as essentially a 6.5mill salary cut for another team.

Say for instance sac wants lawson but Denver wants to cut salary. My thinking is maybe we could get Collison by help facilitating a lawson to sac trade where we give denver prigs and k.pap which would help a rebuild.

Not proposing a trade just conjecture of my thought process. I keep hearing prigs is likely to return overseas but why is that?

Only thing we have to worry about here is the hard cap. To avoid being subject to it, we would be limited to using the Taxpayer MLE, which is ~$3.2 million.

I spoke to all three guys in great length on Thursday at the airport when they came back from Oakland. When I asked Josh about a possible return he kept looking over at dwight with big grin as if saying I will be back. As for Corey he just kept smiling as well as terry so that sounds good.
