Shooting through windshield with a 9mm through a 4.5" barrel and your opponent has a car. I wouldn't like those odds personally. I've shot through a windshield with a 7.62x39 and it took a ton of juice out of it. You have to realize the situation they were in.

 

Perhaps I don't know enough of the story, but I thought they were stopped at the time when the officer unloaded on them, is that not the case? Also, a 9mm round will drop a bit going through a windshield and it'll lose some velocity, but it's still very fatal. I just can't see a reason why shooting 49 rounds at 2 unarmed (meaning it's not a gunfight) suspects would be acceptable.

 

He was standing on the hood of the car according to the article. I would assume the car was stopped at the time.

 

A windshield rips 9mm to pieces. The jacket will rip off the core and have no significant penetration. You are talking out of your ass with "lose some velocity" BS.

 

Shooting 137 times at unarmed people seems excessive to me. That's more bullets than the German police has fired all year.

Disclaimer: Obviously they didn't know they were unarmed. And escaping from the police is not a good idea. But still...

No the situation of shooting through a windshield moron. Shooting a few times realizing nothing happened. You are shooting a weak pistol through a thick windshield meant to protect you from flying objects on the freeway. Then the cops go into video game mode and unload everything.

Yeah, that's what I heard too, if that was the case, he was unloading from maybe 6 feet away from his targets meaning there REALLY was no need for 49 shots. Fire your entire clip? Okay, I can see a case for it. Fire 49 shots at close range? Nope.

So you are saying that in your opinion a 9mm round is not fatal after being shot through a windshield? I disagree. A 9mm still has plenty of velocity left to kill a person even after going through a windshield.....and that's only talking about the first round, after the windshield is compromised the additional rounds fly through much easier. There's no excuse in shooting 49 times at close range at only 2 unarmed targets.

Well when I heard the 130 something number I assumed that it was 13 cops shooting like 10 times each or whatever. I could see that happening, but one cop shooint 49 times? Nope.

 

It won't even go through the passenger seat. The FBI standard for lethality is 12 inches of gelatin so please explain how it being unable to penetrate 5 inches of foam qualifies for lethal.

This is one incident and the round was fired from farther away and at a different angle. Also this is testing the first round through the glass, not the many, many more afterwards. If in that test they emptied a magazine from like 3 feet away from the glass at a higher angle....don't you think it would have altered the results?

A windshield is not some bullet proof glass, a 9mm is a weak round sure, but I think you are taking a video game viewpoint of this.

 

More importantly, we don't know what kind of ammunition the cop was using which means we really don't know anything about the potential lethality of the first round through the glass.

 

OK Dr. Physics, how much FPS does a 9mm lose between 5 and 15 feet after the muzzle? Answer, meaningless.

Fair enough, if you don't know that the type of ammunition used is relevant to how well it would go through the glass there's no reason to keep talking to you.

This officer fired 49 times as well as other officers somebody is going to get sued behind this 139 shots fired and no weapon was found on the 2 people who were killed there has to be more to this than the media has stated.
