+ Fight scenes well done (both cinematography and fight choreo were done well)
+ No hint of romance (developing or otherwise) between lead and anyone else on the show
+ Plot twist at the end sets up interesting storyline
+ Plot twist with the sister sets up the...
+ DEO (sp?) being a thing. (hopefully this won't mean a Supergirl vs Villain of the Week)
+ Keeping Superman's mentioning / involvement as small as they can
    + Special effects on fleek

    - GIRL POWER! (tone this ish down)
    - Gender reversal of Zod (just to get a female antagonist? C'mon.)
    - Why did Kara need to tell Winn she was Supergirl?
    - No explanation of how / when / why Kara ever learned hand to hand combat.
    - Supergirl has X-Ray vision, but they had her using it in combo with super sight. What? lel.

Pretty obvious that CBS "leaked" this pilot to quell the public's bashing of the awful trailer. I think it worked.

You're entitled to your opinion, but I think the show has promise. The first 20 minutes were garbage (I already hate the workplace portion of the show), but the superhero stuff is pretty great. Good fight scene choreography, good special effects.

They need to make the workplace less of a thing though - it doesn't contribute outright to the success of Supergirl (like STAR labs does for Flash) and it doesn't exactly offer any legitimate foils (like Captain Lance does for Arrow).

Because an entire series can be judged solely on its pilot episode? Personally, I'd give it 2 more episodes before calling it DOA.

Because all 100+ iterations of a female superhero have failed? Oh wait, you mean there isn't enough of a sample size to actually come to that conclusion?

Name a couple of female superhero movies or TV shows that have failed since Marvel started the superhero craze, circa 2008.

Give it a shot! I can't tell if the posters here are slightly misogynistic, didn't watch the pilot, or both.

I'm not saying the show is without its faults - again, if the workplace portion of the plot didn't exist, the pilot would be a lot better.

Flash doesn't have Barry be a CSI at all, even though that's his day job. Arrow was smart in deleting Oliver's day job by selling Queen Consolidated to Summer Glau and then Ray.

In order for this show to succeed, they DO have to cut back on the "Girl power!" thing, and make the workplace as minimalistic as they can. Now that Winn and Olsen know Supergirl's secret, they can share scenes away from the workplace.

They should just remove Cat Grant / Calista Flockhart from the show. It's like CBS needed to pull in older viewers, so they cast Ally McBeal as this unlikable boss. Cat Grant (after wiki'ing) was a gossip columnist and love interest for Superman. Absolutely no need for her character. Doesn't seem to develop Kara's character.

Another slight nitpick - at the end of the episode where Kara meets Olsen atop the roof, Kara was wearing a dress without sleeves.

For the sake of continuity / nitpickiness, they can't ever have Kara wear something without sleeves, I feel like. She needs to become Supergirl at any moment - she most certainly hide her Supergirl threads under a sleeveless dress.

    If that makes sense.

Thanks guys, didn't even know this show existed. I thought the pilot was decent and will watch for sure when the season starts.

JJ, you are a trip! Pulling out the "M" word just because people think the trailer was awful is really low class. I mean that sincerely.

Except for perhaps one poster, this has zip to do with the lead being female.

    Hey Juxtaposed

I could swear I saw Deane Cain (the guy from Clark and Lois)as one parent of Kara.

    That is no coincidence.

What in the world are you talking about? Count me in among the majority that thought the trailer was complete ass.

But everyone is ragging on the entire pilot as if it had 95% to do with the trailer, 5% actually good. People might still have a bad taste in their mouth because of the trailer, thus influencing their opinion of the actual pilot. *Shrugs*

The cliches apply to both genders, really - don't think that's a girl specific thing. 20 something with ab entry level job at a big company? check. Entitled boss? check. Work friend that is a really good friend outside of work? check. Mysterious-but-not-really new guy/girl that will help ground you like the work friend? check.

As long as the show doesn't focus too much on ^, I think it'll be pretty successful.

Why do you think the show is "pathetic and will fail miserably?" I'll admit, the first 15-20 minutes of character exposition (oh, you're Jimmy Olsen...from the Daily Planet!) and "lol blind date bc I'm a 20something who can't find love" and "lol I have suuuuuch a crap boss" was really eye-roll worthy, but all the stuff that happened after she saved the plane was very good, for a pilot.

In my opinion, it's already better than 8 1/2 seasons of Smallville, partly because she doesn't have to spend episodes discovering what her powers are. I'm so glad all these superhero shows are taking what Smallville did wrong, and not incorporate all that wrongness into their shows.

I definitely don't mind that cameo. Apparently (after more Wiki'ing), the mom (wife to Dean Cain's dad) was Helen Slater, Supergirl from the 1984 movie.

Casting a Superman and the original Supergirl? Awesome nods - cameos are great!

But in the case of Flockhart, she's being forced into the show. She doesn't seem to help Supergirl or Kara at all - she's like Jameson to Spider-Man, but at least we loved to hate Jameson. Cat Grant is just annoying.

Again, it's as if CBS is saying "we need to pull in those NCIS and Blue Bloods viewers, so we need a known TV veteran!"

I know I'm saying she's annoying / useless, but hopefully, as the show continues, Cat Grant will become a really good character.

Most new series are pathetic and fail miserably. That is normal. It's the exceptions that do well. This shows fits the former category unless future episodes throw out the corny nonsense from the pilot.

Is there any particular reason you are so animated about this show?

I'm asking why you think it is pathetic and going to fail miserably, and the best explanation you have is a blanket statement saying that most new shows are usually pathetic and fail miserably? Come on, man.

By that logic, we might as well not give any new show a chance, since they're going to inevitably fail anyway. Agents of Shield started off as crap, and now, it's much better than people care to admit. Parks and Recreation's first season was crap, and as the series wrapped up, it was one of the funniest (some would say the funniest comedies on TV.

Reasons why I'm excited, going forward:
+ The representation of a female superhero. I think we're long overdue, for one. (Just, no shoving of feminism / girl power down our throats, please)
+ Laura Benanti as the mother figure-turned-final-boss. Hope her role expands!
+ The DEO. Excited to see how they help Supergirl. Obviously mirroring Star Labs and the Arrowcave. And since "the helpers to the hero" is batting 2/2 so far...
+ Developed by the people behind Flash and Arrow; these two shows have a good track record.

Where they can go after this pilot:
+ More of kid Kara's backstory. Ma and Pa Kent were so instrumental for Clark's development - what about the Danvers?
+ More of Kara and Alex's sister bond being fleshed out
+ Develop another mini-boss to Benanti's final boss. Looking like it might be Cat Grant. idk
+ Develop the DEO. What exactly can they do, besides detect weird stuff happening? Do they have weapons? Manpower?

Questions I had, after the pilot:
+ How did the DEO know Kara's weakness was Kryptonite? Did Superman tell the Danvers when he gave Kara to them? And more importantly, why the Danvers? What special qualities did they have, that made them the choice to care for such a being?
+ Kara was shot in mid-flight by Kryptonite tranqs. Shouldn't the ensuing fall and smashing into the car, have killed her?
+ How / When / Why did Kara learn hand-to-hand combat? Did she ever have a reason to?
+ Why would Olsen need to "expand his horizons?" Being a buddy of Superman is like winning the photographer lottery. There's nowhere to go but down, career-wise.
+ Why would Winn know about polymer fiber capes or whatever? Isn't he just a reporter?
+ Cat Grant got a high-res photo of Supergirl, yet still couldn't tell that the picture was of Kara? lol ok.

tl;dr? There's a lot to be excited for, even if one's perception to the pilot wasn't great. The trailer was ass, the pilot less so. (after the rooftop scene, ofc) The show, again, isn't without many weird faults (see my questions), but these are all fixable. As it's a TV show and not a movie, they have plenty of time to explain everything.

TPTB obviously have the superhero portion of the show down pat. Now, they just have to tweak the workplace setting a bit, and I think this show could be great.

It wasn't a good pilot. I had several groans and outside of that it wasn't at all memorable. AoS was much better. The first season was poor because it was repetitive, the pilot was great. The only thing we have available to judge the show off of is the pilot and many of us didn't like it. We said it already.

You seem to have a lot invested in this show. It's kind of weird. I've never broken down a pilot into minute pieces for forensic analysis and probably never will.

Carry on, good luck and have fun.

I thought it was OK. Ill give it a chance. The Danvers surname is going to really confuse me. I kept thinking that Super Girl's sister was going to turn into Captain Marvel. I know This is DC not Marvel but still Super Girl's sister is acting like Captain Marvel before she got her powers.

I do not know about y'all but I think Marvel Agents of SHIELD did suck for a reason that they could have done a lot better with a live action Avengers series like the animation.

Lots of Avenger heroes are more interesting than their human spy counterparts.

An Avengers series would delve more into the characters and not just providing action scenes like in the movies.....

And the audience would have something to watch instead of waiting for 1 Avenger movie every 2 years.

You asked me why I was animated about the show. Why is it weird that I explained what I thought was good and bad about it? It's a lot better than blanket statements of how a show is "pathetic and will fail miserably," no?

Apparently, going into detail gets me a backhanded compliment and a label of weird. lel ok.

But you might be right. Sorry, I should have just replied to your blanket statement with one of my own. "It's actually really good and not pathetic. And it won't fail miserably at all, so you're wrong." Would that have been a better reply? I'm starting to think so.

By the way, forensic analysis refers to a crime lel. It has nothing to do with posting on a forum. #TheMoreYouKnow #CSI #YEAHHHHHHHH

Right? I was thinking this exact same thing. They couldn't go with a common surname, like Smith?

The problem is, RDJ and those other Avengers would rather do movies than spend their lives on a TV show. Not only that, but I think those guys would demand too much money.

Yup. In the past they had movie actors for the movie franchise and TV series actors for the same characters.

I am not sure how the fanboys and homers would take it though
