I remember that bit he'd do with the guy that owned the deli, right next to the theater? Whatever happen to him?

Dave at 12:30 ET was always entertaining. I think I still have the VHS tapes that I recorded of his last week at Late Night and Conan's first week. It makes me feel so old to think that was 22 years ago, and really really old that Late Show was on twice as long as Late Night. Ugh.

I IDOLIZED Letterman back in the 80's/90's. Sounds stupid now, but my nickname in high school was Letterman. Hell, I even used to wear tennis shoes with suits so I could look like him.

I can't even watch any of the late night shows these days because it's all just shtick Letterman was doing decades ago.

Some of my favorite bits off the top of my head:

    - Peggy the foul-mouthed chamber maid
    - "Beat the clock" (only the hardcore fans will remember this)
    - Dave's Mom at the Olympics
    - Dave working the drive-thru at McDonalds/Taco Bell
    - Mujibur and Sirajul
    - Larry Bud Melman walking around NY with the earpiece saying whatever Dave told him to

That was when a clock just randomly counted down with the contestant standing there looking stupid without being given any instructions or anything, right?

I was never really a fan, but to be so successful for so long is a big deal. So, good for him.

I'm sure he'll do well in whatever he does next; I just hope he knows that his days of bagging college interns are done.

For a guy that has made his career out of doing awkward humor, seeing Norm McDonald actually CRY might be the most awkward thing I've ever witnessed on television.

I can't embed videos from my iPad but letterman has some videos online during the Rockets Knicks series from 94. He has a reporter (Indian brothers?) on the scene in Houston. Matt Thomas as well I believe

I love Eddie Vedder but that singing was hard to listen to tonight. He did rock that guitar though.

Two more shows. Bob Dylan playing Tuesday night.

Me too. Nostalgia served me correct. Dave was so much better in the past than in recent memory. Farewell to a great but a tad bit too late.

Agreed. I would say perfect song for that sendoff. Great finale.

Hadn't watched a minute of Letterman's show in years because
w/all due respect to the Letterman fans on this thread, I just found him terribly unfunny(and the top 10 lists even less funny).

I did tune in tonight and despite not finding his monologue and the top 10 list to be funny(again), I did particularly enjoy the bit with the kids. Thought the interaction was pretty funny and of course, one can't go wrong with the Foo Fighters. The sendoffs are also emotional of course so that was nice to see.

Excellent band choice and great way to close out the show.
