All the more reason why no team is going to give him a 4 year contract. Its more realistic to compare a 1 year with us and the option to sign a longer following year to a 2 or 3 year contract he might get somewhere else.
Everyone wants to play for Byron Scott. Wait, no. Everyone wants to play with Kobe. Wait, no. Everyone wants to play for the Lakers. Pretty much. Now, balance it all out. Add to the equation how the Clips proceed - - or don't!!! - - in these p/o's. That could factor into LAL's planning process.
Me? Not at all. But this money is streched and he has to wait for years to take them and he will STILL lose money with any discount he takes. He will lose 2.5 mil in that example and be up in the air for his next contract. Whether we like it or not money is the number one factor for players. The second is security. This way he loses both money AND long term security. Don't blame me.
No. If I were a team that believed that the whole Detroit debacle was just bad circumstances and the real Smith is in this playoffs - pretty much what a GM will have to believe to offer him a contract- THIS would be the year to sign him. Long and at good nice contract before the cap rises. This way if he plays up to/more his contract, he will become an asset with the new environment of the market with the cap rise. If he doesn't he will still be relatively cheap. Next year? Not so much. One year older/ more teams with money/ going after stars.
that example has already been replied to here as being implausible…..you are hereby blamed for continuing to latch onto it
Byron Scott is a coach placeholder for one more year. Kobe's contract ends next year. The los angeles remains. I don't know what the Lakers will do, but what I'm certain of is that at this year or next year they will try to go after stars. That's their modus operandi for decades.
I think the most he'll be offered is MLE money. Say 3 year/5m. In that scenario the difference compared to what the rockets can offer would be $1.25m.
I respectfully disagree but it is too soon to know. The first days of free agency will make things more clear. And also I don't want pippendagimp blaming me.
If some GM out there believes that about him and isn't a risk over 4 years then I'd think smoove and his agent would think that about him too. You can't argue him being an injury risk at his age and not being one to GM's at the same time.
no worries, after a couple hours i'll forget the malakia moniker and won't even be able to distinguish you from the other rooks here anyways
This man gets it. Smith signs with us for a year, knowing that in the following year he will make up for whatever income loss he may have by staying with us, and signing a multi year contract under the new CBA.
But yes. Because players at 30 when healthy and not with serious preexisting injury concerns do sign contracts for 4 years. If they are already injured? Not that much. I.e wesley matthews. Some months ago at his age he would have half the league trying to sign him at a big contract. Now? His price has crashed faster than the stock market in 1929. Your scenario will have smith have next year another contract year. One injury will destroy his value.
Eh, agree to disagree....under the circumstances of his current stretched contract and 50% of his future salary going to DET + this being the clear best environment for him, I'm betting he'll risk a 1 year contract with us.
it's half above the minimum contract (min salary for smith in 2015-16 is 1.5m) so with 2.5m he'd get ~2m (+5.2), with 7.5m he'd get ~4.5m (+5.2), of course tax and cost of living comes into the equation. Other side of it is he likes Houston, his bird rights and reduced minutes he plays here likely leads to a longer career (into the high cap era)
If he wants to stay here, that makes the most sense. I don't think Smith is gonna get any huge offers from other teams. Maybe 5-6 mil/yr, but I think that's about it. Ultimately it comes down to what matters more to him. Getting paid or being in a good basketball environment. By all accounts, he likes it here and the Rockets like having him. And it's not like he's in the poor house given the amount of money he's already made playing for the Hawks and Pistons.
Sure, LAL chases stars (and chases some out!). JS may or may not be back, I think he will, but he will not be a Laker next season!
