I don't think these plans depend on the Rockets as much as they depend on Smith's next bigger contract that is coming.

I don't think it is a rocket's decision. The rockets are going to use their MLE on PG, because that is our weakest link. So, they have to prepare for Smith to turn down their 2 million dollar offer.

i'm not convinced smith would leave this team for a slightly larger dollar amount, just doesn't seem like the type

Yeah, well what happens when someone offers you a 4 year 30 million dollar contract? Nearly 8 million a year is hard to pass up. I'm not sure what's the most we can offer him, but I think 8m is a lot more.

Either way, Smoove is a Rocket for life whetherif he's in our uniform next year or not.

There is no team which will give Josh smith 30 million.

I'm all in for trading Ariza for Kemba if we get Carroll to fill the void.

There is no team. I could see 15 mil/3 years for smith.

yes well what is "slightly larger dollar amount" to you?
Because if it is even one million dollars then please I'm open for donations.
These are real money. Not just numbers. One million dollars is more than most of us will make in our whole lifetime and can support Smith and his family for years after his retirement- that is coming in just a few years.
But the difference won't even be one million dollars. It will be more.

i think they're looking to play randle heavy minutes at the 4 next season and probably won't offer josh $8M per for 14min/nite

It's too soon to know which team will offer Smith contract.
But it will be more than the mle.
The Lakers for example never build within. They always go for FA and sell their picks/rookies. I can easily see them trade Randle and their pick for a star and go after FAs like Smith.
Kemba is their franchise player. So that's not possible.

there are rules regarding how much more he makes over what he's already due to be paid by detroit…..i forgot the actual equation, but from what i remember it's not going to be more than a couple million difference per year. if someone offers him a multi-year contract, then that might be good insurance for him in the case of injury. but i doubt any team is going to do that anyways. there's also the fact of no state income tax in TX. and in any case, no a mill here a mill there……smoove already got the kinda bread that don't matter if a few crumbs are blown ;)

I doubt anyone gives him a 4/30m offer but let's say someone did. That's 7.5ma year. Half of that he gets. Half goes to DET. Thats $3.75m to smoove.

If he takes a 120% over current salary from the rockets that's close to 2.5m or $1.25m to smoove (half going to DET)

That's a difference of $2.5m for next year only. The year after that when the rockets cap space opens up they can offer him as much or more than that 4/30 contract.

I just don't think $2.5m compared to what he's already making is that much incentive with the gains he can make staying with the rockets (a team he likes + a coach that believes in him + playing with a good friend + contender + chance to make more once the cap opens up more the next year).

Just my opinion though.....seems short sighted to leave all that for a minor percentage gain in salary when you could make more in the long run and be happier.

One thing for Smith if he has learned anything from the Detroit experience, he needs to have a system that suits his style/game if he wants to be happy. But if it's about money then he will move on since Houston really can't offer crazy money like some other teams. My feeling is he'll stay for less...

Will Smith be happy here, though, playing limited minutes behind LaMarcus Aldridge?

Yes but this way he will have another one year contract with no further insurance. What's his age next year? I think around 30? It's dangerous for a player with a bad reputation at around 30 when the athletic peak ends and comes the gradual downfall of athletism to have one year contract. And of course the risk of injury.
The positive is the cap rise. But even then the whole free agency will be a game of waiting for first the free agent stars to sign (Love, Lebron, Durant, Conley ,Howard, Horford etc) and at the very end someone of Smiths age and reputation will be signed.
So he will already have lost 2.5 mil he will have no injury insurance or insurance of next big contract at his age and will have to wait most of the summer for the team to finish their plans with the stars.

he's still getting exactly what he would have gotten had DET not waived him. you make it sound like the sky is falling in the smith household when he's still due $26M
