This is very true. Even opting out to sign a small but longer deal probably makes sense financially as well if his health is in question for a true 4 year max deal after this contract is up (assuming he'd opt in under that circumstance). Its better to secure 4 years at a decent salary under the new cap either way. The question really more or less is... what do the Rockets want to do with Dwight, how much do they trust his health, and what obligations do they still have left on the Dan Fegan July 2013 Shakedown. Would anyone really be shocked if they have an agreement similar to the Parsons contract shakedown, that states that the Rockets WILL IN FACT give Dwight a max contract after he opts out next Summer or opts in for the final year? So all that considering, I'm still glad that the Rockets made the deal to get Dwight, but here in a year or two we might be changing our tune when he understandably declines a bit more, and we are stuck with a large contract backing up the books for a few long years when Morey needs to add more talent around Harden.
Dwight is not our problem. hes been our best player the last 2 years in the playoffs. The rest of the team is our problem, Dwight is still playing with heart, no one else is. I don't think he should be our first option, but you have to expect his touches to go up in the playoffs with a slower pace. He's finally healthy, i hope he stays.
this is why i don't mind dwight leaving the team... you just can't afford to miss four straight free throws in a critical game like this... you just can't. he's too much of a liability sometimes smh.
This is true. But the problem is that Howard doesn't bring enough to the table to be worth the huge cap space he occupies. His lack of offense means he's wholly dependent on penetration by perimeter players to score (via lobs and other passes), and that is dependent on the opponent playing inadequate perimeter defense. As we've seen both years, most playoff teams play good (and even great) perimeter D which limits Dwights effectiveness. Add to that his ever worsening FT shooting and I don't think we can win a championship with him taking up so much cap space. You don't give him away but if im the Rockets, I'd be listening for good offers (picks and good young players). And if nothing materializes and the team still hasn't found some consistent additional offense, you have to let him walk. Because Harden and Howard plus change won't get it done.
