I don't understand why the free throw is treated with such reverence by everyone that is pro-hack when it is nothing more than an arbitrary creation. If it was a "free dunk" would everyone tell the short un-athletic players they just need to get in the gym and work on being able to dunk better? No one wants to see a free throw shooting contest between guys that just aren't talented shooters.
exists in college, not the NBA. But I agree, it should be the rule and would remove any silly time window-based rules
article from 2013. Mostly still true (though parts that were negated by the clear-path rule are no longer an issue) http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/56176/its-time-to-end-intentional-fouls
I think they should focus on all the moving around between shots. We waste more time with the opposing team trying to get into the shooters head continually switching from side to side than we do the shot itself.
How come when Harden plays you don't see people leaving the arena? How about when Gerald Wallace, Lebron or any other guy that wants to drive in and get fouled you don't see people flipping the channel. Harden shoots more fts a game than De Andre Jordan, why isnt there a petition to ban his play style since whenever Harden plays he makes the game a whistle fest? Did I miss something where if its Harden making a ft its exciting but when Dwight is hitting a ft its boring as ****? can you also point the last time a team went all out hack an X and won a game with it? In fact this playoff season every time the team tries a hack an X they got owned, Dallas tried that with us they lost, when Spurs did it they lost, and when we tried it we got blown out.
Bball game is supposed to be exploiting weaknesses, if the opponent has midgets then you pound the ball inside. If they have slow footed big guys you camp out the 3 pt line. If they have horrible ft shooters then you...oh wait I'm sorry poor freethrow shooters are God's children, lets excuse De Andre Jordan or Rajon Rondo when Shaq and Omer Asik was able to hit 50% without breaking a sweat, because you know poor ft shooting doesnt count as a legit weakness. I read a post asking if opponents hug the proponents of hack an X each game, no hugging happens in games I play because like any normal bball person I can hit more than 50% of my fts. And I'm short and unathletic, but somehow professional basketball players who get paid millions to play this game for a living should be excused for not being able to do something I can do...or even 90% of big men in the NBA. If Shaq can do it, theres no reason these jokes who cant hit 50% cant do it.
You refuse to admit that it's just a rule. Like all other rules, it is somewhat arbitrary to result in an enjoyable game that has some movement and action in it. The league will address it -- sorry to crush your love of watching clanked free throws. You could always just go shoot some in your driveway. But you've proven your point: you are the one person who keeps the channel on and watches intently during hack-a plays. The rest of us change the channel, go get a sandwich, or start playing with our cell phones, and the NBA hates this because it is in business. Not good for advertising. I'm sure they've nailed your exact viewer demog. but I would bet you don't buy enough under armor or whatever to make up for all the other lost sets of eyes. And yes, in answer to your dumb roll eyes, there is enormous empirical evidence that no matter how much D. Jordan practices free throws, he will still suck at them. Dwight too. And then there is the entire league history where some people (often enormous, lumbering people, not "lazy" people who "don't practice") suck at free throws. But feel free to ignore whatever information doesn't fit the "just practice even more" meme. That's a rhetorical request.
You mean intentional off ball foul, right? Intentionally fouling the ball handler is just regular foul, except in clear path situations.
Such poor, poor logic. Teams are getting the same benefit regardless of who shoots the free-throws. A foul in the penalty doesn't automatically grant a team 2 points, it grants them 2 free throws. It is up to the team taking the foul shots to convert. If Harden has an open drive to the basket and is fouled to keep him from making the shot, then he happens to miss both free-throws, were the Rockets unfairly harmed? I see the rule changing, because the league will eventually bend to a vocal, if not misguided, fan base, but the anger and frustration should be pointed at the poor free-throw shooters and not the teams exposing that weakness. Next we'll need rules preventing teams from sagging too far off of poor jump shooters. It just isn't right that teams take away Rajon Rondo's strengths of driving to the basket and exposing passing lanes. It isn't any fun watching him brick 10 shots a game.
I edited your comment to more accurately reflect how hack-a-shaq on poor free throw shooters would be applied to poor jump shooters. This is essentially what you are arguing for.
No. Not really what I'm arguing at all. I'm arguing that we don't need rules that prevent a team from forcing their opponents to play to a weakness.
How come in the last 2 minutes of the game when the hack-a is illegal you don't see everybody leave the arena or change the channel? Fouls that occur in the context of gameplay are categorically different from hugging men off the ball - for reasons that have been stated ad nauseum, and for reasons that the NBA has recognized for 50 years. If you don't accept it at this point, there's not really much else to say. As for why it's OK to be inconsistent with intentional off vs. on ball fouls, as I stated before, it's perfectly reasonable for NBA rules to be inconsistent. Sometimes shots count for 3 points. Sometimes for 2 points - it's all part of creating a better game. It's not relevant to the discussion, but both the Clippers and Dallas used it a number of times in their wins vs. the Rockets, as did San Antonio vs. the regular season.
75% of all intentional fouls are commited only against 5 players. They hack rule should not change for only 5 players.
They changed it because of 1 player in the 60's - becuase thounsands of people were watching and it made the game a mockery. Now millions and millions have to watch this **** show.
Fundamental bball is to be able to shoot the ball in the hoop. If you call yourself a professional player who is paid MILLIONS and can't make a FT then why the rule should change for your favor? Jordan is the one who makes a farce out of basketball.
Is this you making a post where no one knows what in the **** you are talking about? Plenty of that on ClutchFans "brah".
Mistakes of the past do not justify mistakes in the present. Just teach your centers to shoot a godamn FT instead of finding a shortcut to accomodate the deficiency of a handful of players. Also are you implying I'm HardenHardon lol?
Nobody gives a **** malakolohardonopolos. Go have arm hair reduction you've been saving your drachma's for.
