Was Charles Barkley right about the Rockets defense?

    This is back from February:

Everyone attacked him and sided with Morey but it looks like he wasn't wrong. I get that Beverly being out makes a huge difference defensively but still, this defense has been horrible and no one player, not even prime Scottie Pippen could fix this imo.

On Inside the NBA the other day, he was saying somdthing along the lines of

Looks like Daryl Morey should maybe try to listen others rather than making snarky remarks at former NBA players who says it like they see it. Morey and his great stats about the Rockets being so good defensively are now shrinking while Barkley gets the last laugh.

Here is the tweet that Morey hit him with when Chuck questioned the Rockets defense:

LAC and DAL were 1st and 5th on offense in the regular season and DAL without Rondo was even better than their 5th rank. I think it's fair to say that has something to do with our defense being worse statistically then our season average.

Still expected better than this though.

Our defense has been poor, not because of how many points we gave up in a game, but rather because of how easily the Clippers have scored each possession. Obviously the two are correlated, but its the latter that really matters.

Barkley perhaps saw something in the way we played defense that made him think we'd really struggle against good teams in the playoffs. If so, kudos to him.

But his argument that "no good defensive team gives up 118 points" isn't any good.

You lose Beverley and DMo... what do you expect? So the answer is yes and no. Jason Terry is out there trying to guard starters, there's a reason he hasn't played significant NBA minutes in years.

His point was solid, the way he backed it was not. And it wasn't just Barkley , most people knew our regular season stats were incredible misleading.

I'm more concerned about the offense going thru long stretches where they turn the ball over and miss everything than the defense .... That's been a problem all year and was a problem yesterday ....

Defensively they are very good in the half court , once their defense gets set but they are horrible in transition defense .... the Clippers have feasted on transition offense.

First of all... the Rockets have played 2 of the best offensive teams in the NBA. So of course their defense isn't going to look particularly awesome.

Secondly, Beverley would normally be playing close to 40 minutes per game, with Terry or Prigioni filling in the other 8 minutes.

Now, you have Terry and Prigioni on the floor for a full 48 minutes. They are like 38 years old and were not good defensively even when they were in their prime. Terry or Prigioni might be able to hold their own "okay" for 8 minutes... but not for 48.

I mean, one of the big problems in the series against the Mavs was JJ Barrea. JJ Barrea! Let that sink in. Most of the Rockets' troubles in that series came from the problems created by JJ Barrea. If Beverley was on him, that series wouldn't have even been close.

He sure looks right. Doesn't matter how good DAL and LAC are offensively. No competent team should ever give up 115+ multiple times a series.

The Clippers without CP3 arent "best offensive team in basketball" so let's stop that narrative. Austin Rivers is a scrub who the Rockets helped make look like T-Mac yesterday.

I used to think nothing of him. But he's literally sprouting into a new basketball player.. Kid is closer to 6'5 or 6'6 with a long reach and the game has slowed down for him, meaning he's gotten tremendously better. But I still don't think he's worth a contract over a guy like KJ McDaniels.

Yes he was right. Rockets defense stopped being good around midseason.

Side note - has "narrative" become the word of the year?

Harden does not play defense. Howard is our defense.

D12 should still be the number one option.

Yes he has a point and its not just bev and dmo missing. The problems are bigger than that.

there's no chemistry in our defense because half the starting lineup hasn't played much with the other half
