You'd have to define/categorize scary movies: 1. Ghosts/Supernatural Beings 2. Gory killer types 3. Mosters, Zombies, etc. I'm more interested in #1 types, but Hollywood movies just suck at these for some reason. You'd have to look at foreign films.
It's a solid film but jesus this sequece was the stuff of nightmares...... French Film called Them is excellent, better verison of the American film The Strangers.
The Conjuring would be my vote for a good horror movie. Another movie that I'd recommend would be Texas Chainsaw Massacre (with Jessica Biel). Even the original is a good Horror movie but the original remake was a good watch at the time.
I prefer to think of it as: Psychological Gore/Shock Value Jumpy A lot of horror movies have a mix of all of these. I prefer the psychological slant, makes you think and freaks you out.
This but with one more category. 4. Eerie A movie having an Eerie feeling around it for the whole duration might be the scariest thing a Horror movie can have. Unfortunately it's pretty rare, can't remember a movie that's had that effect.. Maybe The Ring? The Grudge? A lot of previews have had eerie feelz but when you watch the movie it sucks (White Noise, Gothika)
Zombies/Monsters etc .. . . those feel more Action/Excitement that horrow The Supernatural is scary - The Entity, Potergeist, Exorcise The Painful/gory is scary in a different way - Saw, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Audition Movies like Hellraiser does a good bridge of those two Most scary are the ones you leave the theater and some elements stick with you [Hated Blinds for years after Hellraiser] Rocket River
Depends on your favorite sub-genre. I thought Insidious was laughable at some moments, but I know people liked it. I like the creepy/atmospheric films, The Blair Witch Project and Rosemary's Baby are probably among the best I've seen.
some oldies that hold up: Exorcist the Omen I haven't seen Nightmare on Elm in a while, but I remember it being one of the better slasher types.
Thanks, dude, I had blocked that out of my mind. If I ever meet you, I swear to god I will punch you in the nuts.
The Descent is one of the scariest movies I've seen. Then I'd go with: Halloween 6th Sense Poltergeist Alien and Aliens Saw Paranormal Activity (the first one) Cabin in the Woods was really good too. Not too scary but definitely a fresh take on the genre.
Here's a few suggestions The Unnamable TCM Night Of The Demons (1988 original) Silver Bullet Hostel In The Mouth Of Madness A Nightmare On Elm Street 1 And 3 Pet Sematary Fright Night (1985 original) Fright Night 2 (1988 original) Lord Of illusions Night Breed Pans Labyrinth Frailty
In The Mouth Of Madness (Guilermo del Torro wants to make this into a real movie) Pet Sematary (creeeeepy, when the kid slices his achilles from under the bed) Pans Labyrinth Frailty (Don't ever let anybody say that Bill Paxton isn't a badass. GREAT film, and a great guy )
If you're a fan of found footage films, there is a movie on Amazon Prime called Bad Ben. Low-budget horror film with a small cast (literally just one dude). It is surprisingly good and creepy. Apologies if there is a more recent horror movie thread, didn't see a newer one.
