But seriously though, Alien and Silence of the Lambs are awesome. Don't know if I could classify them as nonstop scary. I'm curious to see if anyone knows of some more recent scary films that actually scared them. I feel like I've become desynthesized to horror films
Babadook wasn't bad & it was on Netflix. The first Insidious, Sinister, the Conjuring. The best of those is probably Insidious & I'd give it an 8/10. The rest range from 7/10 to 7.5/10. Sadly the Horror genre isn't scary at all anymore. Edit: There was actually an amateur short film featured on Worldstar that I saw sometime last year. It was pretty scary if anyone wants to dig that up. Edit x2: Found it <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.worldstarhiphop.com/embed/68630" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Insidious was really great. I felt it was at its strongest when it focused on suspense in the house. When they showed too much of the demon is when it became less scary for me. Great movie overall though
I gotchu Ordered favorite to least favorite. I tried to keep out well-known ones The House of the Devil Triangle Trick r' Treat The Loved Ones Dead End May The Taking of Deborah Logan Resolution Splinter The Innkeepers The Sacrament Ginger Snaps The Midnight Meat Train Maniac (2012) The Town that Dreaded Sundown (2014) Pontypool Wolf Creek The Canal In Fear Honeymoon Session 9 Darknet (it's a TV show, but there are only 6 episodes, so it's not much of an investment)
You only need to watch the beginning of ThanksKilling. Just long enough to hear the turkey's first line.
The single greatest horror movie of all time is Deep Red. Just watch the first few minutes. Majestic... <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/n9OzAj4VCAs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> I thought The Babadook was superior to Insidious, for reasons of intellect and symbology, A master work. The Conjuring was just old fashioned goodness. If you like that, check out the 70s film "Burnt Offerings". (Many of the best horror movies were made in the 70s, imo...) The Babadook 9/10 The Conjuring 9/10 Insidious 8/10 If you really like good horror, check out the old show Night Gallery, with Rod Serling. Shadow on the Wall, say no more.
On Netflix I saw these two recently. All recently released. Very artsy Giallo. It plays like a 90min fashion film <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/WYXXpT11WtM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> This one is a good vampire film. I enjoyed it very much. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/_YGmTdo3vuY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I'm not a big horror movie guy so I haven't seen many/any of the recent popular ones, but that is possibly the most disturbing movie I've ever seen. I recall an Aussie indie flick called "The Tunnel" being quite creepy, and I liked the Spanish [REC] 1&2 as well.
Disturbing is precisely the right word for it. The first time I saw it, well the only time I saw it, I actually had to cover my eyes at one point. I was that freaked out about whatever was going to happen next.
Horror movies just aren't scary for me anymore. These are probably too dated to be scary, ie kind of cheesy now, but I still like them The Brood Basket Case, it's intentionally camp. From Beyond Possesion, this one is more weird than scary. Hellraiser II on a spaceship ripoff directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, bleh
Asian horror films are much scarier if you're willing to look. There are some good Japanese and Thai ones, but I forget the names.
Interesting that a number of these just appeared in a recent article about scariest foreign films (Wolf Creek, REC, House of the Devil, Maniac were a few I remember from the article). The Tunnel wasn't on that list, but deserved to be. I'd add The Descent and Twenty Days of Night. Love The Descent.
