Fortunately, we live in a state where our elected officials are so far to the right that they think that God put mar1juana on the earth for a good reason. Maybe it's coming sooner than we think?

What else would have to happen for it to become legal? I'm not familiar with the process.

If this can happen with the 2165 bill then I think 3785 has a real chance

If those numbers mean years, then you are probably correct. :)

The bill has to be voted on in the house, the texas senate committee must pass a similar bill and then it must also pass through the senate. Then Abbott has to sign it in to law... which isn't going to happen. 2 more years folks.

But the mar1juana is a drug and drugs are bad for you.

My D.A.R.E. officer told me to say no to drugs.

Ummm I don't think it'll pass if it says minors can use with supervision. Even though they can drink with it.

There's only 3 more weeks in this session, iirc. First it would have to get out of the Schedule Committee to even get put to a floor debate/vote.

It will not get out of that committee.

It's a good sign that this is in the conversation. It will permeate the state political zeitgeist and eventually become legalized.

Even though there are swaths of conservative voters out there, Texas is by and large a very pragmatic state and usually votes in what is best for business.

That said, roughly 70% of the prisons in Texas are run by private companies; you can count on these companies lobbying against legalization of weed as it supplies a chunk of their income in weed-related convictions.

I'm not chomping at the bit for legalization anyway, but I'm particularly uncomfortable with a legalization based on anything with God in the sentence. God made weed. God also made cyanide. God made rattlesnake venom. He made ebola and earthquakes and cancer. I think that logic is terrible if you do believe in God, and even worse when you don't.

Anyway, on legalization -- if we're doing it (and all signs point to Yes), I hope all the states turn quickly like with gay marriage. A hybrid system with it legal in some states but not others is going to generate crime.

I have much more hope for the decriminalization bill but I am thrilled that there is even a conversation happening. We can call the reps in the Calendar committee. Todd Hunter is the head and his number 512-463-0672. I am going to call today. We can also call other members but I do not have their info currently. It may not do much but it is all we can do at the moment.

If they put a stipulation in there that all weed smoking must be done indoors with the window closed, I'd vote for it to be legalized

I don't think this is a good idea. Weed is a gateway drug to harder drugs like mar1juana, THC, cocaine, mojo, spice and heroin. I've read a few scientific studies about this in the British medical journal, The Lancet.
