I'm not too keen on Charlie Hebdo either. I don't like what they do, at least in their worst incarnations. I think they are slightly different because its an institution designed to offend many different parties, while Geller is focused on just the one. But, the attack on Charlie Hebdo and the attack on Pam Geller's exhibit are obviously both completely beyond the pale and we need to do what we can to protect these people and their ability to do what they do, even though I don't like what they do. (Though I'm not one of the ones you saw claiming Je suis Charlie.)
I think we've hashed out every possible angle of this story for now. See y'all for the next one, unless the Rockets take another dump on the Toyota Center floor tonight, then I'll see everyone tonight, in every sub-forum, YELLING AT EVERYONE!
So the Charlie Hebdo people who were tragically gunned down were British Muslims who sympathized with their own murder? We're talking about the people behind the "offensive" displays, not who sympathizes with the terrorists. You kinda made my point for me. Hebdo doesn't care who they offend. Call me when Pam Geller decides to throw a free-speech event that offends other religions other than Islam. People can do similar things for different reasons, you know. It's evident that you find simple people adorable based on what a high opinion you have of yourself. It's the only way to make sense of that delusional inflated self-esteem of yours.
I don't like what either group does either. Personally I'm not a fan of people intentionally being assholes, but I do accept that it is protected free speech and I understand the reason for it. Probably my only exception to that would be the Westboro Baptist Church, if someone killed all of them for the nonsense they pull at funerals I'd feel nothing at all. We all have bias that limits objectivity and that's mine.
It is. In my defense, at least my bias is based on ideology rather than political affiliation......and I acknowledge my bias. You'd be shocked by the number of simpletons that have no clue that they have a biased opinion, or why.
What are you even trying to say? Neither does what you said make any sense nor is it remotely humorous.
I meant before they showed up to the event, itself. I get that people have different views and are motivated by all sorts of different things. I just can't imagine being motivated to go to an event like this. But to each his own. But make no mistake...never at any point was this about the First Amendment being threatened. The only one who can violate the First Amendment is the United States government. This wasn't a protest about the government potentially telling these people they couldn't draw Muhammad. It was nothing more than, "The government allows us to offend you, so we're gonna do it." I'm free to say all kinds of awful thing about other people without the government stepping in to say I can't....but I'm not gonna do it.
Semi-related but honest question ATW, and I hate to bring this up here but I am truly curious: how do you feel about Germany's laws limiting certain types of speech related to the Holocaust and the Nazis?
I'm saying your post had absolutely nothing to do with what we were talking about. We were talking about the motivations of the those committing acts these terrorists consider offensive, not who sympathizes with the terrorists.
MadMax caused 9/11 because he didn't draw a cartoon of Muhammad to offend his kid's friend in the name of free speech. You're welcome, Clutch.
