People are reading too much into that. He's dialled it back. In the past he's always jinxed the team with his pre-season proclamations about expecting the rockets to win it all.
If we had to lose to a team it would be ironic to lose to a team coached by Doc Rivers. If Doc Rivers coached like Mchale... Doc Rivers would have been got fired. Doc Rivers out coaching Mchale is just classic common sense.
So the Spurs bombed away 3s huh? Try 23.6 attempts per game during the Finals. Almost 10 less than we average. The most they ever attempted in any Finals game last year was 26. They take good threes in the flow of the offense off of great ball movement. The Spurs philosophy is to pass up good shots to get GREAT shots. That's something that at times is completely lost on our Rockets. As far as the Clippers, anybody can get hot from three, but shooting over 30 per game is not a way to consistently win in the playoffs.
Didn't say that. People keep saying you can't win shooting all those 3s. It's dumb. Same crap as the old theory that a jump shooting team can never win it all. And like always people always overlook the fact that we live in the paint more so than the 3 point line. Bottom line clips just beat us at our own game. They just shot the 3 ball better and made their free throws. But people want to say that the strategy isn't successful. It looked pretty successful against us.
And we'll see if they can pull it off. The Phoenix Suns couldn't. But I will say this...I would much rather have Curry, Thompson, and Barnes shooting those threes than Ariza, Smith, and Brewer. Therefore, the system is flawed. If you're going to attempt over 30 threes per game, you at least have to sign some legit three point shooters. The only 2 that should be taking threes regularly on this team are Harden and Terry.
So you would rather them take mid range 2s instead? Who wouldn't want amazing 3 point shooters over mediocre to average ones? The system isn't flawed. if you think that trading in 6 or so of our 3s for mid range jumpers than you are crazy. We already get into the paint and to the line more than just about any other team. There seems to be a common belief that 3 point shooters than you can actually afford to put out there are just growing on trees. Not the case.
McHale is a great guy, but he's taken us as far as he could. It's time for a coach with a system, who stresses defense and discipline.
The problem is the so called system being utilized and the personnel just do not match and McHale is either too dumb to see that or is just a Morey b**** doing what Morey tells him. The essence of the system is drive into the paint looking for a lay up or look to be fouled. And if that is not there kick it out to the 3 point line for someone to take a 3 point shot. Here is the problem. The only guy capable of breaking down the D and driving to the paint is Harden who also happens to be our best 3 point shooter. When Harden does break down the D and kick it out, you have below par 3 point shooters like Ariza, Brewer, Josh Smith spotting up. Along those lines, no one else is capable of driving to the paint and finishing effectively. We have all seen how ridiculous Ariza looks when trying to do that and say he happens to get a drive he doesn't have the skillset to kick it out if it's not there and it ends up in an awkward looking layup attempt. I have no idea why we can't run a heavy dose of Harden n Howard pick n roll, as well as back door cuts etc. We play glorified version of pick up ball and that **** doesn't work come playoff time against well coached teams.
I would rather they ran an offense over freestyling and isolation. If the offense leads to an open 3, so be it. If it leads to an uncontested mid-range 2, so be it. I'm not opposed to us taking a lot of threes, I just don't think it's possible for a team to consistently get 30 wide open threes per game. Our problem is we take about 20 good threes per game, but about 12 bad ones. There are times where Ariza, Smith, and Brewer either rush up a three, or force a contested one, and the percentage is not going to be very good.
It was inevitable. Just got another cowardly anonymous rep comment about how I act like I know more than McHale blah blah blah. For the life of me, I can neither understand nor abide such blind loyalty in someone so mediocre. It's like the soldier in WWI who has faith he won't be mowed down like the last three waves of his brothers-in-arms when he climbs out of the trench to run through machine-gun fire across No Man's Land. "Me, I'll be the only one to survive. And I'll defeat the enemy. Because my leftenant has a plan. Right, Leftenant?" "Run faster! Try harder!"
That's the only cutscene of coaching fans and opponents alike get to see for a reason. There's other things McHale preaches and directs that cannot be disclosed.
Just because we bring this up doesn't mean it's all we know. All we see, yes. Although other coaches come up with more than bromides and platitudes in their interviews. McHale, not so much. SS, DD. Same speech, different day. Same red Solo cup. Same bleak expression. The team has a disjointed, undisciplined, meathead approach to the game. YMCA pickup ball. If McHale reeeeaally got on them like he should, well....he doesn't.
Isn't he not telling the truth . Yes he is repeating himself but aren't they making the same bone headed mistakes. Haven't this team responded after getting embarrassed a few times throughout the season? Why do you think that, we'll because Mchale got in that ***. These players especially Harden needs to hold themselves accountable for their play out there last night. They are the ones who didn't follow the game plan. They are the ones that stop playing defense after the 1st quarter. And they are the ones, mainly Harden and Josh, commenting careless turnovers.
But isn't there such a thing as a coach who will MAKE the players be accountable...or else? There are reasons that certain coaches are always towards the top in key categories like fewest turnovers. Some coaches demand it. It's one thing to say it over and over, but if you don't hold the players accountable then it falls on deaf ears.
#2 seed.. one of the better records in nba. coach of year candidate, 2nd round of playoffs. Not sure if you know what mediocre means. your blind hatred is more the issue here. check yourself. Go ahead and thump your chest when rockets lose. feels good huh? I wont anonymous rep you since that seems to be your way of getting rep.
