For an offensive lineman, sure. I'm not too worried about it because by all accounts he's a super hard worker. I think he puts in the time to get better.....and even if he doesn't, he can still create space with his body so he can be productive from day one.
Not exactly sure where it ranks amongst the "hardest things to fix"...but it's fixable, and that's what is important. If he was 5'5" tall...or ran a 4.8...or had smaller hands... Those arent fixable. He has the necessary tools and work ethic to be a lot better. I have little doubt that he can be a very solid contributor to this football team.
Sure, but it's something that is fixable and he's a hard worker, I'll take that any day over something like not being able to catch the ball or something less fixable.
I am as well. It seems the wanted to take a chance on a weapon. I'm having a hard time figuring out if this is a samurai sword, a pocket knife, or a spork.
Well, true. If he was that small and slow and couldn't catch like Bobbythegreat said, then he wouldn't have been drafted at all.
The one thing I'm thinking is you can move him all the **** over the field to create mismatches and confusion. The way they were thinking the linebacker saftey drafted later, I have to think the same concept was in their mind. Maybe you line Mumfrey in the backfield, put him in motion, and get him with a LB in space. If you can actually run him like a RB every once in a while - maybe do some pass protection, the defence should have to respect that right?
i always liked the TEs being the mismatch, like owen daniels without 2 knees, who did run a 4.8 or higher but was always wide open. The slot can be slow if he is a jitterbug, who can turn a 1 yard pass into 6 yard gain. Most true burners are one trick ponies,hilton excluded. I'm trying to think of other burners that are also great route runners and have exceptional hands.. calvin and julio?
Gronkowski, Hernandez and Graham were all sub 4.7 which is pretty darn fast for te and presented matchup nightmares. Maybe they are Julian Edelman types but third round is high for that
Depends, in large part, to how the defense is built. Again, the Patriots noted teams loading up on CBs and playing more nickel and dime and recognized an opportunity to match a big, athletic TE with a smaller, less physical CB and it wreaked havoc. Teams are adjusting - bigger Ss that can cover and tackle are now premiums. So you look for out to exploit the course-correction...
Yeah that's true, if the defense can get to the QB in a hurry, then burners don't really matter because you still have to use a 3-5 step drop to give them time to get open and that could be more time than you have.
Who was selected 68th overall by the same GM making the picks now. This guy is the anti-morey. Doesn't value assets at all.
This pick 100% makes sense with who we have right now. Deandre is the all purpose pro bowler with guys like Shorts and Washington knowing how to get open/ where to be on the field. Strong has all the tools to be a successful receiver in this league, but the proof will have to be in the pudding.
Busts happen, even for Morey. Also, you and I both know the influence the coaches had on the picks, so let's not blame everything on Rick Smith. Posey turned out to not be worth a damn....it happens.
Didn't see this earlier in the thread. This is "the good and the bad" from draftbreakdown.com. Strong, obviously, is #21 in white. The arrows will show you where he is. First the good - Jaelen Strong vs USC, resulting in the "Jael Mary" which endeared him to ASU fans. I constantly see this spoken of as his best game. Keep in mind that I never was small enough to play WR so I have very little experience from which to draw on when it comes to evaluating WR play. But, two things stand out to me - he could have gotten a few receptions by coming back towards the QB on routes like quick outs where the DB jumped in and batted the ball.
