You desperately want to believe the right-wing Texans are the crazy ones, but reality isn't cooperating.
Mr. Clutch is dead on here. There are magazine articles, tv shows, cartoons, print cartoons, art exhibits, etc. that mock Jesus and other Christian characters (Mary for example) all the time and nobody gets killed over it. It's not to say there is 0% chance that there would be violence over something offensive to Christianity, because when dealing with people you can never rule out all possibility of crazy, but the different is that when it is about Islam there is a WAY higher probability of crazies coming out to kill people.
Well, they may be crazy, but religious violence isn't really the go to move for American Christians this century. LOL
Why aren't we talking about the specific individuals who committed this act and what led them to this point? http://www.cnn.com/2015/05/04/us/garland-mohammed-drawing-contest-shooting/index.html
Nothing wrong with having that event. In the USA you are allowed to make offensive artwork. Folks that might be offended, have a choice to ignore it. Sorry that the guard got shot in the ankle. DD
poor houstonhoya. you are so misguided. people made fun of all religions all the time, but islam is the only one that retaliates violently in such a manner.
I'm sure there are others, but the shooting due to offense that I can remember is the 1978 white supremacist serial killer shooting of pornographer Larry Flynt, and that guy wasn't offended because Hustler had an interracial photo shoot. Extremist Christians kill abortion doctors...that's happened, but have all been prosecuted in this country. Yeah, I don't think there's great evidence showing anti-Jesus drawings would lead to the same shootings nowadays in Texas. I don't claim to know Islam, but houstonhoya sure doesn't know how to make a logically valid comparison in this instance.
please provide examples of other religions attacking artists for portraying their religion in a negative light.
We should expect that a lot of people would be offended. Just playing the numbers, if you offend a large enough group, you'll get some low-hanging fruit to come attack you and put your name in the papers. Westboro managed to goad people into attacking them on a couple of occasions too.
While I find the group that put on this exhibition to be a disgusting group of extremists deliberately trying to cause trouble, in my humble opinion, in the United States, they have the freedom of speech to do just that. I wouldn't change that freedom of speech for the world.
