I don't tip for takeout and I never will. You dumped the food in a styrofoam container? That is deserving of a "thanks" but I don't know if it's deserving of cash. /*******
I tip waiters and food delivery people very well, I don't tip for takeout. There's no service involved there that warrants a tip IMO.
There is a reason eating out in Europe and UK is really expensive...they put the price of service in the menu item. You then don't have to tip, and in most parts of Europe are not expected to (other than a couple of coins to show appreciation). If you want your steak to cost $45 instead of $35, we could move to that system or your bloomin' onion to cost $18 rather than $9.99 or whatever it costs.
I was never aware that tipping for takeout existed. Now I feel like an ass for never tipping for takeout.
If you pay with a charge card there is an area for tip amount in addition to your signature. So sometimes it is awkward to just sign that area without leaving a tip. Easier to pay using cash money.
I don't think it's very awkward. In fact, I put a line through the tip space sometimes rather than putting the total below. Like a previous poster said, if you have a dollar and the service was quick and didn't suck, go for it. Kind of related note: had the worst experience at BWW Tuesday night. Pretty sure the guy taking my order was high, took 45 minutes to get my food to go (I get it Rockets playoff game, but still), and when I finally got my food half of the order was wrong. I felt bad for the guy who had nothing to do with the order when he had to show me all of my food only to be told that it was wrong, wasn't his fault. I think he was new, he was looking around for people to help with the situation but all of the other employees were nowhere to be found. Poor guy. But suffice to say, they did not receive any kind of tip from me.
For takeout, I tip 10%. A bit more maybe 12% if it was eye candy at the counter. Begging for tips is like begging for rep
BWW SUCKS with takeout when its a busy game in my experience. I was watching the Super Bowl a few years ago and we placed an order early in the first quarter because we knew it would take a while for it to be prepared. He says it will be an hour so we call after 50 minutes just to check on the status and were told that it is almost ready. My brother-in law leaves with a few minutes left in the second quarter to pick it up. He doesn't come back until the start of the 4th quarter and is pissed. The order wasn't close to being ready when he got there and when it came out it was wrong. They finally fixed it after an hour and he left. The wings were completely cold and disgusting. I couldn't finish more than 6-7 because they were so bad. We waited 2 and a half hours for inedible wings. He calls the manager to complain and the manager hangs up on my brother in law.
