People are really overhyping Bryant. It's the Chicago effect. Even if we had him, there's no way he'd be getting the national coverage he's getting. Yes, he's a great prospect who put up monster numbers in the minors, and spring training, although the latter has no correlation and does not matter at all. But (some) people are expecting him to come in the league and dominate right away. I think he'll have a very good year, my prediction is .250/ 22HR/ 70RBI, which obviously is very good for a rookie. And I do think he'll only get better. But he's going to have to adjust--like everyone, to major league pitching.
He's a big-time prospect in a big-time baseball/media market... what would you expect? Remember Steven Strasburgh's debut? It was carried on national TV with Bob Costas announcing, and DC is not half the baseball market Chicago is (probably not much better than Houston). Its ironic that to this day, that debut performance still ranks as one of his "best" games as a pro. Of course he'll have to make adjustments... but he's not some "kid" out there, he's a 23 year old who played 4 years of college ball. He will be expected to get there really soon, regardless of the "adjustment" factor.

That tweet isn't related to Appel, or Bryant, or the Astros for that matter. And us first place balls clubs don't worry who bad teams call up.
Sad thing is he was the obvious choice for so long And the guy is right he would be AA at best if we took him
You do know the Cubs also had Bryant #2 on their board, right? Of course you don't. That would make things too difficult to b**** about in hindsight.
Na I sure don't, I've never said I know who is on teams boards in what order Didn't realize I was required to know that before I could post on an Internet board
You specifically made a claim that "he was the obvious choice for so long" and someone rebutted it. If you're going to make a baseless claim, don't get whiny when called out on it.
Isn't he talking about Rodon and not Bryant? If so, Rodon was an obvious number 1 choice for a long time, but his obviousness did diminish throughout the year. Not sure where anyone had him on their draft board.
I'm not trying to defend Beard, but I think he was referring to Rodon as referenced in the JR tweets not Bryant.
Everybody does realize that Rodon was in a different draft than Appel and Bryant? Not sure why that's being discussed here.
Yeah, I apologize for assuming he was talking about Bryant in a Bryant thread in a response to a post about Bryant.
The first response was to a quote that mentioned Bryant as well. And he then responded to a post specifically about Bryant and to another post that exclusively mentioned Bryant. Again, I apologize for not realizing they were previously talking about a pitcher that was completely irrelevant to this draft or discussion. And for obviously offending J.R.'s sensibilities.
The only reason Appel is at AA is that Corpus is closer to Houston than Fresno, CA. and there are no direct flights to Houston from Fresno ergo making an emergency call up difficult to pull off.
Talking about Carlos Rodon - who the Astros passed on for bad arm Brady - who was called up today by the White Sox. John Royal said Rodon would still be in 'A' ball with the Astros. The Beard agreed and said And the guy is right he would be AA at best if we took him.
