Why can't some people just claim that Kevin McHale has done a good job this season rather than claim he has done a bad job or over praise him for being coach of the year?

Pop's substitutions and resting of his players isn't something I'd question. He does it every season, and even as a lower seed, he's shown his team comes ready for the playoffs.

All players know their roles and execute them to perfection. I'm sure if Pop treated the regular season as the playoffs, they'd be in contention for the best record every year, but regular season record means crap if you flame out in the playoffs. I'd rather sacrifice a few losses and a better seed for our players being prepared for the playoffs.

I've never been a fan of McHale. You can point to his Rockets head coach record for good percentages, but he's also had the best talent we've had in a long while thanks to Morey. I think a head coach demonstrates his worth in the playoffs where talent is more equal and comes down to how you gameplan or make adjustments. So far, McHale's playoff record isn't great. OKC was a bad matchup, but Portland was a winnable series last year and we underperformed. Hopefully, McHale will have made improvements, but some of his decisions against good competition still leave me questioning his competence.

Having the (true) MVP on your team helps.

Thank you McHale, for using your eyes and finally putting Capella in ahead of Dorsey in the rotation. Better late than never. Even if Morey gave you an ultimatum, at least you had the presence of mind to listen. Something your predecessors seemed unable to do.

Really not sure what the criticisms are of McHale at this point.

When you ask people it usually ends up being something absolutely r****ded regarding the 14th and 15th guys on the bench.

And the most injuries in the freaking league by a wide major hurts your team.

Are you saying he should have done better?

Just give it a rest. We could not have done any better. sheesh. Cheer for the freaking Team, dude. I guess you cannot give up your sour argument.

For the record I'll agree to give McHale credit where it's due. Harden most certainly was the MVP and did the heavy lifting but coach gets credit as well.

Having said that, to answer your question.....Yes Absolutely! I absolutely expect this squad as is to overcome the spurs, Warriors or whoever they face through at least the conference finals.

The Rockets are certainly good enough to do it even without bev or dmo. I wouldn't necessarily say McHale is not "legit" if they happened to lose in the second round depending on how they lost.

This team is positioned for a deep run this year and I expect the rockets to truly realizing that long overdue success this year. No excuses. Opportunities like this don't grow on trees (unless you're the Spurs)

But yeah I am anticipating the special playoff run that Yao/tmac never had

I am comparing the irrational attitude people have towards both entities- is that too difficult for you to understand, or do I need to break down the analogy further??

So, what you're saying is that you EXPECT this Rockets squad to get past the Warriors? And the same for the Spurs? As opposed to feeling they have a chance? OK.

I think, though, if you were to look it up, every year that Popovich won a title was a year in which all his players were healthy- well the big 3 at least. Not taking anything away from him- he deserves his status. But I can't remember the Spurs winning a title when one of those 3 were out, or any of the major bench players. McHale did screw up against Portland- and particularly Aldridge- last year. Hopefully he knows what to do with Monta- that's going to be the main problem for us- Dirk isn't the same, and no one else is a take-over-the-game player like Ellis (I think he was a major reason the Mavericks took the Spurs to 7 games).

What are you so upset about? I believe the set roster going into the playoffs can win it all. They could lose against the Warriors or Spurs, but I just feel this roster can take them in a series if they played to their abilities.

With Howard and Harden beasting at their respective strengths, they should be world beaters along with the supporting cast that they have now. Last year's squad should have been at worst a 2nd Round exit.

This year, a year later and older, they need to learn from the tough experience last year and make up some ground on a wasted year last playoffs.

Yeah if McHale is a good coach (doesn't have to be great) there is no reason why this squad with Harden/Howard can't goto the Finals

Actually, I do as well, I think they can take either one of them. Just don't understand how GS got that good, that's all. I personally think they're playing over their heads, particularly their bench. who knows.

I will also add that it's not just about losing. It's HOW the Rockets lose that will be a pretty good indication on a coach's competency in the playoffs.

Last year, McHale failed plain and simple. Stotts out coached him and upset the Rockets big time.

Hopefully McHale has gotten smarter and wiser from last year's playoffs. The Rockets are certainly primed and positioned to make a deep run. I hope this year will be the antithesis of last year's playoffs.

He did a hell of a job managing minutes and rotations this season through the storm of injuries we have faced

    http://espn.go.com/blog/houston-rockets/post/_/id/428/mchale-deserves-credit-for-rockets-rise

HOUSTON -- The NBA Coach of the Year is probably Atlanta's Mike Budenholzer or Golden State's Steve Kerr. It's hard to ignore a franchise record 60-win season given how the Hawks offseason turmoil was contained when Danny Ferry took his leave of absence or a 67-win season for the Warriors.

However, there is a guy in Houston who coached through 180 missed games due to injuries, earned the Southwest Division title and a No. 2 seed in the Western Conference.

With the Houston Rockets' 117-91 victory over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night, cranky old Kevin McHale should get some credit, votes even, for the job he's done this season.

McHale probably won't care if he gets a single vote because that's how he was raised in the game. You don't play this game for awards; you play for titles. He learned from the best: Red Auerbach. Hey, McHale won a title in his rookie year with the Boston Celtics and when that happens, you're not worried about some division title. You have bigger aspirations.

And with the regular season concluding, McHale has his Rockets in good positioning to compete for a title as they start the playoffs against their I-45 rival Dallas Mavericks.

Sure the road is hard given Golden State won 67 games and the defending champion San Antonio Spurs finished the regular season winning nine of 10 games.

We're not even going to discuss the East and how Cleveland and Atlanta might face off in the conference finals.

You just can't dismiss the Rockets, who are rolling into the playoffs on a three-game win streak to close the season.

"The guys just found a way and they went out there and played hard," McHale said. "They got after it and it's a credit to those guys. They didn't use excuses, we didn't have any big 'next man up' speeches, we just went out and played."

They were led by James Harden, who finished second for the scoring title with 27.4 points a game and quite possibly the MVP award as well.

Harden closed with his fourth triple-double of the season: 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

McHale pointed out veteran Trevor Ariza, who won an NBA title with Kobe Bryant with the Los Angeles Lakers, as another key component to this group. Ariza finished with just six points on Wednesday, but over a five-game stretch in early April he averaged 18.2 points per game.

It's not hard not forget that two-game losing streak to the Spurs last week yet in McHale's mind it was like those losses were in another century.

He told his team to keep playing and don't worry about the scoreboard, just control what you can control.

When the Rockets lost those two games to the Spurs, it seemed a division title was slipping out of reach and they would be headed for a playoff matchup they probably wouldn't like.

    Now? A two-seed.

    How about that?

"It's a blessing," Dwight Howard said. "The regular season was great but whatever happened in the regular season, we've got to put that behind us. This is a whole new season and we've gotta come out ready to go."

McHale has juggled the lineup while missing Donatas Motiejunas, Patrick Beverley, Terrence Jones and Howard to injuries.

General manager Daryl Morey acquired three veteran players in-season, Corey Brewer, Josh Smith and Pablo Prigioni, to help with depth.

When Beverley went down for the season, McHale inserted Jason Terry and Prigioni in the backcourt. With Howard out, Joey Dorsey, Smith and Motiejunas moved into the frontcourt. When Motiejunas was done for the year, McHale squeezed in rookie Clint Capela and Howard, now on a minutes restriction, along with Smith.

"It's been real great, [McHale's] definitely a veteran's coach," said Smith, who scored 13 points in 18 minutes off the bench. "He instills a lot of confidence in his players. Whenever you can be up under a coach like that it benefits you tremendously as a veteran."

Of course, having Harden around helps. McHale ran the offense through the shooting guard and turned him into a playmaker. Along with a coaching staff stressing ball movement, spacing and tough defense, the Rockets posted the third-best record in franchise history (56-26).

"It shows the character of this team," Harden said. "No matter what, we had a lot of adversity this season. A lot of injuries. A lot of things didn't go our way but we didn't complain. We didn't back down from anything. We kept fighting. We just kept battling through whatever came our way."

The Rockets haven't won a playoff series in four seasons under McHale and just once overall since 1997. Yet, given this matchup with the Mavericks and the way McHale has juggled things this could be the year.

"Now the fun starts," McHale said. "Now the real season begins."

I have been one of McHale's harshest critics. But he did a fantastic job with a team often riddled with injuries; his play-calling has been better; he has kept the morale of the team up; he led us to a division title. I have complete confidence that he will guide this team through a long playoff run.
